I have been told by gp that all the commercial cough medicines you can buy for children are a complete waste of money. From experience they never seem to do any good. We just let the cough wear itself out now - just a bit of calpol etc if she is getting a sore throat from it.

steam - we have a humidifier which really helps. and if it's keeping them awake at night medised - the antihistamine stops dripping into the back of the throat which exacerbates the cough.

Depends on the age of the child as medised has not been taken off the market for under 6 year olds !!
Totally agree with the humidifier though we have one in the little ones room as one of the twins takes bouts of bronchiolitis and it is fab, there is a little medicine cup on top we can add oils into,i usually add some eucalyptus and some lavendar helps him get a great night.

my recently purchased bottle has dosages from 2 years

If its a stupid annoying cough caused by gunk trickling down the back of the throat then we have found clarityn antihistamine is more effective than anything else we've tried. I wouldnt try it if you suspect asthma or if you think its on the chest.
(not a medical person just have a dd who has been a very cough-y child)

Lavender oil rubbed on the chest, or a little on the pillow makes for a deep sleep and I always use it when ds2 gets this sort of cough at night. He suffers from asthma and it very often takes the "edge" off the coughing. Maybe because it knocks you out..in a nice, sleepy sort of way.

If you look here www.mhra.gov.uk/Safetyinformation/Safetywarningsalertsandrecalls/Safetywarningsandmessagesformedicin es/CON038908 and click on number 3 document it gives the listings of the new guidelines for cough and cold medications for children including medised

I was given warm water, honey, lemon and whiskey as a child . Very nice it was too. (I'm not suggesting you do that)

Warm water, lemon and sugar? How young is your child?
