Urgent: 7 year old Ds fell off bike and chipped front tooth....

I have come back from a rare day without the kids to find that ds1 fell off his bike at the park (with dh) and is cut and bruised all over. But he has chipped a front tooth. There is a large corner missing. It is quite jagged and sharp. It is an adult tooth.

The dentist is closed until MOnday. What do I do?

Also, what can be done about it longer term? I assume they will file it initially but what after?

if you have the piece they can sometimes glue it back on,otherwise they will probably round it off for now and build it up if needed when he's older then crown it if needed when he's 25 or so.
If you have the piece or if it is sore or a very big bit missing or tooth wobbly, ring your dentist outof hours number,or nhs direct or denplan if you have it.
My ds did this on roller blades when we went away for the first time for a weekend without the older two [they were with friends]!!

I would ring the dentist equivalent of nhs direct for advice.

My DS (11) broke his tooth in half a couple of months back. I contacted the emergency dentist who said there was no point in glueing the half a tooth back.

He put something on the remainder of the tooth in DS's mouth as it was extremely painful and sensitive to deaden it, and told us to wait for our next check-up when our own dentist would talk us through the long-term solution (it's a second tooth).

At the check-up our dentist found that there was an infection in the root of said tooth and root canal treatment ensued.

Long-term, the dentist is going to build up the tooth so that it's the same height as the other teeth in the row.

Hope this makes sense.

i had this happen to me 14yrs ago at school! have had the 1/2 tooth repaired a few times - it breaks easier than a proper tooth - next time havev a veneer done.

they do have to drill/fle it a bit to get some grip for the stuff to stick on but its not that bad and you can have pain releif if needed.

The corner can be built up with a white filling material (composite) to match the shade of the tooth.

Watch out for discolouration of the tooth, extreme sensitivity, swelling on the gum above the tooth, all signs of possible nerve death which will require root canal treatment a possible effect of trauma to a tooth.

It will be fine to leave it until Monday - have a soft diet and try to keep him from fiddling with it with his tongue otherwise he will end up with an ulcer.

Oh my god! Now you are all scaring me to death. Root canal?? He is 7! He will barely open his mouth for the dentist to look in let alone have any work done.

He has complained of it hurting him - but I put this down to general bruising all over his mouth. I gave him some pain killers and will see how he is in the morning.

I absolutely cannot face dental treatment with im. I am so sad

My mum's tooth broke in half the day before she was travelling the states on holiday - the fantastic dentist repaired it so you wouldn't even know. Don't frighten yourself with possibilities. They can work wonders these days.

ring for advice.

IlanaK · 21/03/2009 20:17

But ring who? Is the an NHS direct of dentists?

Our dentist has an out of hours number to call in an emergency. We just dial the normal appointments number and a voice recorded message gives out an emergency dentist number.

My son was petrified about going but honestly there was no pain other than the pain he suffered with the infection.

IlanaK · 21/03/2009 20:42

Thanks. I will wait to see how he is in the morning and then maybe call.

What is so gutting about all this is that his baby tooth in the same place had pitting to it and was discoloured. We were so happy when the new tooth came through white and clean. And now this has happened.

It'll be fine - it's amazing what wonders dentists can do now.

morningsun · 21/03/2009 22:19

I think you can ring the number on your dentists answer machine,or denplan[private] if you have it,or the normal nhs direct.
My ds has had his fixed 2 or 3 times now as the extra bit is not as solid as the normal tooth, but it has been pain free as the nerve was not involved.
