silent reflux

I have just had my 6m old diagnosed with silent reflux- (feeding lying down with head to one side, arching back whilst feeding, fingers down the throat trying to gag, takes ages to feed (Breast)LOADS of burping and needing to be upright most of the evening, unable to settle baby in the house to sleep-lots of pram hours!)AAAARGH! Apart from wishing I had known earlier because she obviously has been in discomfort I am in a world of weaning and now need to to give her ranitidine.
Its vile!!
Has anybody got any tips for getting this horrid mixture into her without further trauma?? Its zantac syrup, have heard that generic solution might be more palatable.

Anybody had experience of this and how long to try it for? Ihave struggled on for so long with this I cant believe things might be different (v unhelpful health visitor...)

You poor love, its sooo frustrating struggling with silent reflux unsupported .

My dd2 had Ranitidine and Domperidone from about 8 weeks old, and I gave it to her (after several futile attempts to syringe it into her mouth) in some EBM in a bottle. She never minded the taste, if it was in milk, she drank it - right up until 18 months. Formula, EBM, cow's milk later on - no problem.

Might not be the same for your LO, but worth a try?

Also, its different for all LOs, but in my dd's case weaning went a lot more easily when I gave her bits to sample rather than spoonfeeding pureed food....she hated purees (choked on them, I think) but pasta, chewing on pizza crusts, large chunks of vegetable she could pick up and suck on - all went down very well. She sort of ended up a BLW baby because of reflux, as much as anything else

Good luck, do persevere with the Zantac if you can, it made a big difference to dd after a few days - though she did have Domperidone with it, so not sure how much was down to each med, iyswim.

I am sorry, DS has Gaviscon in his bottle so can't help.

But bumping for you

Wigglesworth · 20/03/2009 21:23

So sorry for you and your DC, silent reflux is truly awful to deal with, my DS had it for the first few months and it is hard.
Have you tried cranial osteopathy? We had DS treated and he was a different baby after a few sessions. Our health visitors were not helpful either they just banged on about baby massage (there was huge waiting list to get on the course they ran at the childrens centre, DS finally went at 7 months ). When we told them about cranial osteopathy they just scoffed and said "well if it makes you feel better".

What is it with health visitors? Mine said to give DS calpol and apologised the next time I saw her as she had never heard of silent reflux. Would love to have a look at the course content and what they so learn.

My GP reckons that HV learn how to go around mums' houses drinking cups of coffee! Mine was a complete waste of space. Ds had various remedies for reflux but the only thing that stopped it was him getting older. Even early weaning didn't help.

safetypin · 20/03/2009 22:11

Thanks! She isnt on bottles yet but will try in a wee bit of milk in a cup. Anthing to try not to trauamatise her any more! I feel terrible for not getting it diagnosed sooner..

I had no idea that I could use larger pieces of veg to wean with- she seems to hate puree too!! I wonder if reflux babies generally choke on it?? Just cook and let her have a gnaw??

DS is a BLW boy, hates purees

safetypin · 20/03/2009 22:20

Any advice on BLW?? Books? Sounds perfect. I have been caught in the Annabel Karmel trap and it sounds like it would be far more natural for my LO. So easy to get blinkers on with first baby and trying to do the right thing (hmm)

google babyledweaning.com for advice, think that is Aitch's website, others have raved about Gill Rapely (sp) to be honest we just did what we were eating, but cooked without salt.

thanks!
