5 month old Ds has really dry skin. What's the best moisturiser?

I've tried Aqueous cream, Aveeno, and E45 so far, and nothing is making a huge difference.

Is he too young for Oilatum in the bath?

No, Oilatum is fine -- we've been using it since DS was about 8 weeks.

We tried every emollient under the sun and the only one that worked for DS was Doublebase. It's quite expensive so would try to get it on prescription if you can!

MissisBoot · 20/03/2009 19:49

diprobase is brilliant -think its similar to doublebase.

go and see the doc and get them to prescribe

Waitrose baby bottom butter - at last it is back on the shelves. I bought 3 tubs last week.

1 for me, 1 for DS, and 1 for dd.

MrsMattie · 20/03/2009 19:50

I use Aveeno on DD's face and Diprobase on dry bits on her body.

McDreamy · 20/03/2009 19:51

we use diprobase - it's ok

bringonthetrumpets · 20/03/2009 19:52

we got doublebase from the gp and it works wonders for ds's skin-6 months

IMO olive oil is safest and least potential for allergic reactions. It's what they recommend for newborns and baby massage and the only thing I can tolerate on my eczema - everything from aqueous cream through to E45 makes me flare up.

It does make them smell like salads though - especially if you use extra virgin

llareggub · 20/03/2009 19:55

Have you tried olive oil?

bringonthetrumpets · 20/03/2009 19:56

i actually heard from our baby massage instructor that olive oil doesn't soak into the skin as well, but to use organic sunflower oil instead. it's lighter so it soaks in better-also makes for a much less slippery baby

noonki · 20/03/2009 20:05

My DS2 was like this -
we were adviced to bathe him as little as poss (about twice a week)

and put a little olive oil on after bath and not to rub dry.

MmeLindt · 20/03/2009 20:11

I used Eucerin for DD, it was really good. You need the one with Urea. We used the 3% one for DD's body, and the 12% one for her face.

Dozymare · 20/03/2009 20:13

waitrose bottom butter - £2.50ish a jar, all natural, smells divine

Jojay · 20/03/2009 20:20

I used olive oil when he was tiny, though his skin wasn't so dry then.

I may try it again, and if it doesn't help, maybe a trip to the GP is in order.

I'll give the bottom butter a try too - I've heard good things about that.

Thanks everyone
