2yo ds diagnosed with asthma - need cheering up

After a horrendous 4 weeks with ds2 coughing uncontrollably, and more recently with vomiting he has been diagnosed with astham. Totally agree with diagnosis as it fits with symptoms over last 12 months and family history. Pleased that he is getting better with correct treatment. But I'm exhausted after dealing with lastest dramas and tearful - I was still clinging onto the hope this would be his last ever attack of croup and breathing difficulties would never bother us again.

Would love to hear from mums where things got better after diagnosis because the last few months have been very hard.

My two are chronic asthmatics and at times it's been really, really tough BUT...

They are both fit kids, much fitter than most of their peers because of their asthma. They both swim competively and DD was also a Triathlete for a time until a knee injury forced her to stop running. DD holds several County records for the distance events in swimming and has represented her County in swimming and her region in Triathlon. In fact just this last weekend she broke the 1500m record for our region and won 7 golds and 2 bronzes out of 9 races at our County championships, all with asthma and a broken rib. She's now 18 and although having asthma has made her life more difficult at times it's made her stronger, fitter an dmore determined than she might have been, same goes for DS.

Encourage your DS to learn brass or woodwind instrument, it encourages good breathing techniques. Most of us only use about one third of our lung capacity, playing an instrument or swimming encourage us to use more of our lungs which is only a good thing especially if you have asthma.

Well done to your DS Herbie, kids are amazing aren't they? I know of quite a few asthmatic/diabetic children who have gone on to use their condition to achieve some pretty remarkable things.

My DD1 was diagnosed with asthma at 2. Starting her treatment made her so much better, I couldn't believe that I had gotten so used to hearing her cough at night that it seemed very quiet when it stopped!

She is now 10 and has grown out of it, she hasn't needed her inhalers for about a year.
