dd2 has had a cough for a few days and croaky with a sore throat and headache. She has been unwell on/off with this, one minute bouncing around and the next poorly. She complained of tummy ache on thurs and fri but hasn't since then. She has a temp on/off ,not sure how high but can tell by touching her and red cheeks.
Her urine also has a very strong smell about it,strong ammonia. She also has a rash but i think that is her excema which does flare when she is ill.

Scarlet fever?

It's going around mumsnet at the moment. He urine smells strong because she's dehydrated a bit, the temp is using up more fluids so you need to get her to drink more.

Pop her to the GP in the morning with the list of symptoms, even if they have gone by the time you get her there.

SlightlyMadScotland · 15/03/2009 22:18

I think this is the 4th therad in 2 days I have seen scarlet fever mentioned (waves at scrooged from teh other SF thread!)!

I wouldn't rule it out - but the rash is quite distinctive - looks liek sunburn. Slight goosebumpy/sandpaper texture. Redder in hte warm areas of the body like armpits and groin.

It could be also be UTI with strong smelling urine and tummy ache. Although as scrooged says the smell could jjust be a knock on effect of dehydration.

NuckingFuts · 15/03/2009 22:26

I will take her to gp if i can get her in,you have to virtually beg to get seen.

It is hard to tell with the rash because she has always reacted through her skin whenever something is amiss.

Will google scarlet fever thankyou.

[waves back]
Told you it's going around!

Rash is also pink, not necesarily a rash, more like blotches. Ds has had it, his rash didn't look anything like sunburn.

ragd0ll · 15/03/2009 22:32

Mention scarlet fever when you call the doc, should get you seen. My dd and possibly my ds have it.
[waves at scrooged and SMS]

I'm going to start charging for this soon, payable through PayPal please

SlightlyMadScotland · 15/03/2009 22:36

LOL at Scrooged and Ragdoll!

Key thing about scarlet fever is that 99.9% of the time it follows a spre throat which you describe.

Temp of 39 last night(hence other thread)
Down to 38.5 now but she is poorly.
Rash is virtually non exsistant now but her tongue is white with red spots. So Scrooged you may well be right.

Got gp appointment at 12.

Layers. Easy to undo/take off. Separates, so you can remove top half easily.

The tongue does sound like SF.

NuckingFuts · 16/03/2009 10:23

Thankyou

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 16/03/2009 11:36

It could be SF but there is also a viral infection going around at the moment with very similar symptoms. DD1 and I have had it recently, but the doc had a look and said it was definitely viral and therefore not SF. Needs to be checked out though, as ABs are necesssary in the case of SF to prevent complications. The distinctive thing about SF, which I have had in the past, is that the rash peels after a few days, like sunburn.

NuckingFuts · 16/03/2009 12:38

well the Gp said basically what you have said LadyGlencora.
I am still at her tongue though,it is just like this here

oh link not working arghhhhh

OP posts:
NuckingFuts · 16/03/2009 12:42

here?

OP posts:
Tiggiwinkle · 16/03/2009 12:42

What did he say about the tongue? GPs in my experience are not always good at recognising SF and are too keen to put it down to a virus. If you are not happy get a second opinion.

NuckingFuts · 16/03/2009 12:43

When i told her about the tongue she didnt say anything but looked in her throat and said there was no strep in her throat

OP posts:
Tiggiwinkle · 16/03/2009 12:48

Did the rash feel rough to the touch? You can often feel the sandpapery texture even after it fades.

Scarlet fever can also leave darker lines of rash in the skin creases (underarms, groin, inside of elbows). This is often visible for a long time after the main rash has gone.

If in doubt, see someone else.

NuckingFuts · 16/03/2009 12:52

The rash has faded now but it was hard to tell if it was her exema flaring or not.Not rough though.

OP posts:
LadyGlencoraPalliser · 16/03/2009 12:53

My GP said the same re throat. A bacterial infection would be easily recognisable (to a doctor anyway!).

NuckingFuts · 16/03/2009 12:58

she is relunctant to drink because her throat is sore.

Ice lollies? Fruit flavoured ice cubes? Usually go down well with my dcs.
