I should know this one.

Ds2, vomiting and nasty nappies yesterday evening, all night etc...feels a bit hot today, had calpol this morning, was fairly cheerful - had more this evening and it's not doing much. Temp 38ish, keeps doing that little oh-oh-oh cry all the time, very pale, really not happy.

No cold and has only been sick big time about an hour ago, since this morning. Thought he was on the mend.

He's 21 months, ds1 (5) had the vomiting thing all yesterday and again just now...but no temp with ds1? So maybe something else iyswim.

Sorry to ask such a mundane thing but I can't think what's up with him, not got a cold, just the sicky thing. He's only happy on the boob but then I expect it'll all come back up in a while.

Thanks.

Could he just be teething on top of the sickness?

His canines arejust through but might still be hurting I suppose. I'm worried in case it might be ear infection, headache, something like that. Maybe we should just see the Dr but am reluctant to drag both of them to the hosp when they're poorly and might chuck everywhere.

I should think it is just a stomach bug (but they can be very nasty I know). Not all children will get temperatures with them - my ds had this last year and didnt have a temperature but his cousins who caught it from him did!

Your poor ds - hope he gets better soon.

JaneSeymour · 15/03/2009 16:47

Thanks, maybe it just hits them differently.

I'm not sure what to do for him - had calpol, had milky, sleeping very fitfully and if I put him down he'll wake. Poor mite

He's kept down a fair bit of milk today though. i'm worried in case temp isn't coming down, have only got rubbish armpit thermometer and no syringe for the nurofen as he was playing with it and it's lost.

He's been really hot and miserable all night - still miserable, has had calpol and nurofen alternately. His cheeks are quite red, not been sick again and having loads of milk but still unhappy

I don't know if he needs to be seen, or could it be his teeth? I keep asking is it toothy and he says a perfunctory yes but that's one of about 3 words he knows, and unreliable!

Should I take him to Drs? Ds1 seems a bit better and is trying to eat. 27th load of washing is on...

Oh I know, the washing, the washing!!

If you are still concerned I would see if you could get him to see the gp. chances are you are doing the right things already and its no more than a bug but a bit of reassurance would be nice I guess.

Hope he improves soon.

Thankyou so much.

Well at last he has cooled down so I shan't bother with the docs I think. He's been sick again since 3am though, can't seem to keep milk down, might try water.

Poor lamb. Ds1 much better though...not sure why he's had a sicky thing then no sick but temp, then back to the sick.

I hate this - just want to sleep! Luckily maths channel is on and ds1 very interested in that

Back to the grind...

you could try water - tiny sips off a teaspoon, but tbh, you should stick with breastmilk, even if he doesn't seem to keep it down. It WILL be keeping him hydrated, and giving him a bit of nutrition AND will be helping to to get rid of whatever nasty bug he has (if it is a bug). If not, it is still sooo comforting for them.
Hope you all feel better soon

If he's had a stomach bug then he probably can't really handle milk at this stage. Temporary lactose intolerance is common after a stomach bug. Some children's probiotics will help establish some sort of bacterial order inside him and help him with milk.

JaneSeymour · 17/03/2009 05:13

Thankyou - conflicting advice there, does breastmilk contain lactose then? I mean in the same way as babies can be intolerant to cow's milk, can they with BM too?

I just fed him again nd he's sleeping now - not sure if it'll stay down, hope so..

yes, breastmilk contains lactose (all dairy contains lactose)
NO, babies are VERY rarely intolerant to lactose. They can be intolerant to COW'S MILK PROTEINS, which are not really meant for human consumption.
Your breastmilk is perfect as a probiotic - keep feeding him.
Good that he is sleeping - hope you can get some rest too

thirtypence · 17/03/2009 06:04

Yes, keep breastfeeding him. Breastmilk contains probiotics.
