Hi My ds is 2 years old and has been a bit grumpy since wednesday, he had a sore throat as he kept doing a funny face when swallowing.
He has been eating and drinking normally and everything, and had a slight temperature on Friday.
Yesterday around 3/4pm we noticed that his back and tummy looked red, almost like a sunburn (he obviously hasn't been in the sun). Above his eyebrows and his forehead were also red, as well as his scalp.
He was absolutely fine in himself, running around and jumping as usual, but this morning the rash hadn't gone away.
We took him to the see a doctor who didn't look worried because he didn't have a temperature, chest sounded normal, his eating and drinking and wetting of nappies was normal, tummy normal etc...
The only thing he said was that his tonsils were very big (and I've got an excruciating sore throat myself). He said to leave it and if he got worse we might have to put him on antibiotics.
I was just wondering if anyone had experienced a rash of that kind before (in yourselves or kids).
It looks a bit like a heat rash as there are a few tiny spots as well, but mostly it looks more like a sunburn or nettle rash.
Any ideas?
P.S: Also I remember that I overdressed him on saturday morning, as I had a temperature myself and felt really cold I thought he might be as well, so he had a vest on, a long sleeved tee-shirt and quite a thick jumper. The house was quite warm as well and he kept jumping around and running.
His legs and arms don't seem affected a part from a few heat spots which have started to fade.
I feel really bad but he didn't look like he was hot (not red in the face or anything).
I would be very grateful for any replies!!

My son used to get rashes a lot and they never came to anything. Usually he was under the weather and it was how it showed itself.

Have you done the glass test?

Mine never stop eating and a Doctor dismissed my son at 8months as he must have been okay as he was still eating and having milk. He ended up on antibiotics with a severe chest infection. Just keep an eye and trust your instincts.

I hope you both feel better soon.

Yeah I did do the glass test, and it becomes white when I press the glass against it.
Also I would hope that the doctor would have picked up anything like that.
I think the doctor saw that ds was just running around trying to open doors etc.. in his surgery, so that's why he wasn't that worried. He did ask me loads of questions and examined him thoroughly, although he didn't seem to pay much attention to the rash.
I know what you mean though, trust your instinct.
To me he looks alright but it's just that rash that I found odd (it's scary when you don't know what it is I think).

It sounds like it may be scarlet fever, which is a rash associated with a sore throat caused by strep infection. Did it feel rough to the touch? What does his tongue look like?
A white coated tongue accompanies scarlet fever, followed in a couple of days by a bright red one (with darker bits showing through hence the name "strawberry tongue")

If there is any chance it could be scarlet fever, he must be given antibiotics as there are nasty complications which can follow later if it goes untreated.

Many doctors still do not seem to recognise it, although it has become much more common again in recent years.

Have a look on google at the rashes of scarlet fever and the strawberry tongue and take him to get treatment if you are in any doubt.

I agree with scarlet fever. My DD has it right now, and sounds very similar in symptoms!

Ok, I saw yet another doctor this morning, who examined him and said it looked like a viral rash.
I explained to him that the "flushed look" seemed alternate between pink and back to white (on his back, trunk and forehead) depending on his temperature, and he said: "yeah that's quite normal the more he gets hot the redder it will get."
He took his temperature which was 38 I think but actually it's been pretty good all day and the pinkness has gone down a lot (almost disappeared although his nappy area still looks pinker than the rest of his body, but it's uniform, like a light sunburn).
He didn't check his throat as my son wouldn't open his mouth (frankly he didn't insist too much if at all).
I was HORRIFIED this evening when he opened his mouth to say "Doraaaaa", and I saw some white patches on his tonsils, and a thin white coating at the back of his tongue.
Now I can't be sure about the white coating because your mind plays tricks on you sometimes, my husband didn't noticed, perhaps it was just slightly white.
It doesn't stop the fact that those white spots on the tonsils have been overlooked.
I'm going to go back to the doctors tomorrow and tell them.
I'm really quite p.....d off and worried because his sister has just caught chicken pox as well, and I know he's gonna catch it, I'm scared there might be complications.
