How long after starting antibiotics did your LO get better?

DS has been on amoxycillin since Wednesday and is still not sleeping at night and now full of cold. Thankfully his temperature is stable now.

Thanks

Hello, poor you. Tonsillitis is hideous. I would expect antibiotics to kick in within 48 hours or so but then again we have had to have 2 week doses before. DD is allergic to penacillin so we have to have arythromycin which is more broad spectrum.

When does your dose run out? 5 day or 7 day course? Is he eating / drinking?

How old is he?

claireybeemine · 15/03/2009 13:34

DS was only 6 months when he had it but his temperature went down the same day we started the antibiotics and he was much brighter and more lively within 72 hours. It did take him a couple of weeks to fully recover though

Its horrible isn't it, poor DS.

How long has he got left of anti-biotics??

DD was ill for a while (had other things at the same time) once had anti-biotics for all started to look and feel better about 7 days after the course had finished.

However, shes poorly again now, bringing up the mucus from her chest

thank you so much for posting, maybe i was expecting too much too soon! dh thinks ds is teething now, which obviously overlaps symptoms - full of cold, mucousy, dribbling, in pain, not sleeping, very irritable!

i do think we are over the worst of the tonsillitis, as his temperature is normal now and he hasn't had any sit still, obviously ill, lethargic episodes. we gave him nurofen at 1am this morning and none today. at night, when he is crying / groaning, he is almost half asleep still, rather than fully awake crying the house down. but it goes on for hours. part of me agrees that it may be the teething now which is disturbing his sleep.

he has a 7 day course of antibiotics, so we finish on wednesday. he's 16 months old.

Hopefully you are over the worst. Pain relief the most important so don't hold off if you think he would be better served with some nurofen.

Hope he is much better tomorrow xx

thanks bluebumedfly - yeah, this has been a learning curve to say the least! i spent the first day giving calpol when his temperature kept getting high, until it was suggested to me to give calpol every 4 hours anyway for a day or so, to prevent it getting high again!

tis a balancing act isn't it, we've given him some just before bedtime, as he was quite irritable and whingey late afternoon, which is unlike him. he's slept soundly this evening, which is lovely and the monitor has been very quiet! i do want him to get some rest as he is so tired, it is difficult to work out what is tiredness/teething/tonsillitis!

tbh i am off to bed now, as have hardly slept much myself the last few nights. like having a newborn again thanks for posting
