Scarlet fever

My DD (8) has just been diagnosed with this. She is very very unwell. Has anyone elses kids had it? I forgot to ask the Dr a couple of things, and now the surgery is closed til Monday!

Firstly, her temp is still at about 40, as it was at the Drs. How long do I leave it before getting worried, or is it something that will just sort itself out? (she is getting nurofen/calpol/kool n soothes)

Secondly, I didnt ask about returning to school. Does she just go back when she feels better? or is she infectious for a certain period of time?

also, can it get worse? Is there a time you need to seek further help/advice?

My friend's ds has just been tentatively diagnosed with this, or possibly strep throat - he is on ABs and was told he'd be infectious until he'd had 2-3 days' worth of them, then not.

Kids with scarlet fever are usually put on antibiotics, I thought?? If she's not on any, I'd at least call NHS direct or if she's getting worse, take her to A&E?

Is she on ABs? She should be or there is the risk of serious compliciations.

she needs to stay off school for 5 days after starting ABs.

It is also worth noting that her skin - particularly on her fingers will probably start to peel in a aweek or so - not to be concerned about it.

Just treat her fever as you usually would. Cool clothes. I would ring NHS direct if it was that high for more than 36-48hrs for further advice

She is on penicillin, and thankfully this morning is much better. Temp is only 37/38 today, so she is feeling more relaxed. She is covered from head to foot in the rash still though!

thanks for the advice about sending her back to school, i had no idea of when to send her back.
