9 month old with ear infection

dd nearly 9 months has an ear infection - temperature for 2 days starting on monday then prescribed antibiotics on wednesday. Her fever is down but now leaking gungk from one ear (we're off to docs again later - I'll definitely have a pfb sticker on my file).

am using nurofen when she seems in distress/fever going up plus the antibiotics.

We're off on holiday on tuesday so I'm assuming swimming is out (but will ask doc).

any other tips on getting rid quickly/stopping it recurring? just remember suffering from these on/off as a child and it was miserable.

Don't worry for a second about PFB Sticker honey, you need to do what is right for your LO. Ear infections can be really nasty and an ingored one can lead to a perforation so get down to the docs!!

My DD has always had ear infections, the goo thing sounds like your baby may have glue ear. It can be recurrent, a friends DD had it for a year until they stopped getting her ears wet at bathtime. They got one of those shield things that go on the baby's head when you wash their hair to keep the water going in her ear. Anyhow, it worked wonders and she was glue ear free for ages.

Last week at the swimming pool she went under my mistake (now almost 2 years old) and the glue ear came back. You may be able to go swimming if she is over the infection but keep the ear dry.

I was told by my doc that pain relief is the key with ear infections. Antibiotics are OK but they start to have an effect on the child's immune system. We had 6 doses of ear infections from Sept to Xmas, i came on here in desperation and a brilliant MNer said to try multivitamin drops (Dalivit) and a probiotic. I have been giving these since the 1st Jan and even though we have had colds we have had ZERO infections and it is nearly half way through March. I am thrilled!!

SO, keep the ear dry even in the bath, make sure you give some probiotics but you must wait until you have finished the antibiotics otherwise they counteract with one another. Hopefully if you can build her immune system the infections will be few and far between.

Have a good holiday!

thanks - doc was ok and quite reassuring re holiday.

what kind of probiotic are you using out of interest - I know what effect antibiotics have on my tummy so keen to help dd get over it as quickly as possible. Vitamins also sound a good plan

We use infant acidophilus and dalivit. You can get both to dissolve in milk (maybe not the same bottle!) without a trace of a taste.
