New born baby and chicken pox?

Ok I am new mum so sorry if this all sounds silly. But I have a new born baby (09/03/09) and yesterday MIL and SIL came to visit for several hours. It now turns out that SIL has chicken pox.

Should I be worried about the baby having caught it? MIL seems to think as I am breastfeeding and I have had chicken pox she'll be OK.

If it is still possible for her to catch it - what should I be looking for? And is it serious in babies?

your MIL is kind of right.
if you've had CP then baby will get antibodies from you and I believe is very, very unlikely to catch it.

that said, it isn't 100%. there is a small chance she could get it.

Thanks thisisyesterday

Have just scoured the net too, which suggest immunity is passed to the baby for the first couple of months, so fingers crossed she's OK.

Thanks Belle fingers crossed shes OK.

I probably agree I'd like her to get as much illness over a done with, so she isn't ill later but may be give her a little longer I am not sure either of us could cope if she is ill before she's a week old!

DS2 was 10 days old when DS1 got chickenpox. Child doctor here advised me to check regularly for spots but that a BF newborn is so tanked up on mummy's antibodies that it's unlikely he would catch it.

She was right.

Is chicken pox dangerous to a FF fed 10 week old?
