How do I treat D&V? Kids aren't getting better... :(

Hi -- DS1 (5) and DS2 (1) have had D&V since Monday. DS2 really only has diahorrea, was sick just once. DS1 is basically fine but has slightly runny poos and vomits every night, once, about 5am.

I'm going to take them to Doc today as I think it's odd that they haven't got better. Am I doing something wrong? They get lots of fluids. Both seem hungry so I'm giving them normal meals - is that wrong? DS2 is slightly sleepier than usual but DS1 seems fine in himself except that one nightly vomit.

Any advice? Four days is a long time to have this, isn't it? Am worried that DS2 might get dehydrated.

Thanks

If they are still having d&v I'd be careful about the food - avoid dairy products, stick to BRAT (banana, rice, apple, toast) until it's cleared.

Thank you -- I'd never heard of BRAT before, that's very useful.

Took them to Dr - DS1 is fine, DS2 has swollen glands. She said wait till monday then if not better, they'll take a poo sample to see if it's bacterial/treatable.

My poor boys.

Poor boys, and poor you.

My dd1 had a diarrhoea bug at half-term, explosive watery diarrhoea for 3-4 days and lots of painful cramps and urgent but not watery poos for another 3-4 after that. Mostly at night

I think there are some gastro bugs that last a week, they're not all 24 hour ones unfortunately. She wasn't sick, but then again dd1 has never been sick in her life - unless you count once from coughing too much - so she probably has v strong stomach.

Those of us who caught it had varying symptoms, from 24 hrs violent diarrhoea to 4-5 days cramps/nausea to my Mum who had the first with a bout of vomiting thrown in for good measure. Horrid, hope you're all better soon!

ps I gave dd1 diarolyte when she had it, in case of dehydration - get it over the counter at chemist, ok for babies up.

Thank you! Thanks for the advice and the sympathy. I got some diarolyte today.

One day, the house won't smell of vinegary vomit... i can't wait...

I agree with BRAT too.
ds1 has a cast iron stomach and can go straight back onto a normal diet immediately.
ds2 is really sensitive and once he's had any d or v we have to go really slowly reintroducing foods otherwise he just gets worse and worse.

Hope they're better soon
