abdominal migraine

My youngest, DS, now 11, has been laid low for days on end over the past 2 or so years with stomach pains, he is almost feverish in the mornings when he has it and barely eats all day, it can go on 4-5 days at a stretch, once or twice a month.

We have now seen a consultant who says it is probably childhood abdominal migraine, I have been offered beta blockers but it was not explained I need to see GP, because prescription couldnot be used outside hospital. The facts on Propranol are a bit scary, does anyone have any experience or advice? Also I am wondering if the tummy aches may be linked to our giving in to a play station as they had enough money to buy one, and now an X box! I think the timing would coincide.

A website suggested the link with bright lights which is obvious in headaches but not so obvious in stomach pains. Has anyone had a similar experience or could give advice, I had feared the pains may be GF intolerance because of family history (brother AS gluten intolerant for 9 years) but that seems to have been ruled out.

Look here

farlex dictionary
It is very helpful with definitions, side effacts of drugs etc. Make sure you type it in the Medical Dictionary bit for the best results

Thanks Ikboo, bit confused by the websites which say abdominal migraine is also chronic vomiting syndrome as DS does not vomit! Will talk to GP about the medication, Propranolol is like any other strong medicine the rare side effects are worrying but it is probably worth trying, just harder to do that for a child rather yourself and someone who is healthy when not ill ifyswim!

DD3 has abdominal migraines, diagnosed last year, she's 9. Never vomits but very quiet(very NOT her!)pale and a little clammy. I suppose the diagnosis was quite easy as we have a very strong family history of migraines.
I refused the beta blockers and after a little messing to find something that suits she now has anti spasmodic meds for when she has a tummy ache.
We have been quite lucky, school are very supportive and will call if meds needed before lunch - need to be given before food.

Our lad can go months summertime free then autumn winter gets here and boom, I also wonder about computer games? It’s a tremendous strain on all of us, and I hope he will outgrow this, did your son? Thanks
