How much sleep is too much sleep for a poorly 1 YO?

I can't believe i am MNing this-especially as DS3 is my 3rd child

He is very lethargic and when he is awake he looks like he has had no sleep at all and is doing that heartbreaking feeble moany cry.

He had sickness on monday that has now subsided but now he has diarrhoea.

He is (now) having some of his milk - which is watered down because of sickness - but i can't get any meds into him, he clamps his mouth shut and/or blows raspberrys.

I don't remember the other 2 being this tired when ill and it's only as today has gone on that i am wondering whether i should be getting him to GP. Part of me is saying that its fine- sleep will do him good but part of me is wondering if that is just me being a crap mum.

He has no temp. Well, i have no thermometer (see crap mum) and he is warm but he is not as hot as last night and my lips are not burning when i kiss him on the forehead

(i really am crap aren't i!)

Let him sleep, I say. Ds had a bug last week and is still sleeping 7-7 then 2 hour nap at 9am and 1 hour nap in the afternoon. I figure that he must need it so leave him to it (and come on MN)

If you're worried, then take him to the GP - and it sounds as if you are worried so I'd take him The GP will say oh there's a lot of it about make sure he has lots of fluids he'll be better soon. They you'll feel better.

Not having a thermometer is a GOOD thing, not a crap mum thing.

lol seeker that's why i don't really want to go! Especially as i know that if i can get him in i will wait 3 hours past my appt time to get seen!

Typically, today is the one day i have literally NO ONE else to collect DS1 from school too

I have this, and slept 9.30am-4pm yesterday, and then 10pm-8am, and am still tired now. Let him sleep it out-it is a really bad bug.

JackBauer · 10/03/2009 13:42

Let him sleep, and if the diarrhoea lasts more than 2 days then take him in just for a once over to put your mind at rest.
Let him drink flat 7up as well if you can, it rehydrates better than water and tastes nice! The novelty may mean he drinks more.

LilianGish · 10/03/2009 13:43

Let him sleep - you're not a crap mum. He sounds like my two when they have a bug (I have no thermometer either!).

MerlinsBeard · 10/03/2009 13:51

had steadied myself for a pasting so am very pleasantly surprised!

I am getting as much fluids in as i possibly can and am reasonably sure he isn't dehydrating.

I have flat lemonade (oddly i always have that in but not a thermometer) but is that not too sugary?

so sorry that you have it too PLP - although it's reassuring to know it's doing the rounds

It is sugary but if they aren't eating then I figure some sugar is better than nothing IYSWIM.

Not a crap mum, a non-panicky mum is more like it!

LilianGish · 10/03/2009 13:57

In fact a doctor told me a can of coke is a good as a packet of rehydrating powder.
