screaming toddler not sleeping help!

I'm a bit baffled by what's going on with my 2 year old DS. He's always been a great night time sleeper and has napped for an hour every day for the last 18 months (never needed much in the day).

For the last couple of weeks he has been waking up at night sobbing and demanding his daddy. The last two nights it's been every half hour or so. He's also been difficult to get down at night and is currently screaming upstairs in his cot and asking for a million different things to avoid sleeping even tho he must be exhausted from two nights of no sleep. He's had blazing temperatures at night and was sent home from nursery yesterday with a 39 deg temp that came on after his nap. In himself he seems fine though he's been complaining of an itchy head and itch legs (no spots tho).

Am totally baffled and not sure how to handle it -please help!

Please don't let him scream by himself - he is poorly. Cuddle up with him. Worry about his sleep once he is 100% better.

give him some calpol, get a blanket and snuggle with him either in your bed or on the coach

you can't leave him to cry when he is ill

I'm not leaving him to cry I've been in and out of his room to settle him like a yoyo I would never leave him in a distressed state except to go to the loo and ask for some advice from mumsnetters.

I want him to sleep for his own sake so he can get well

if he is getting worked up then he won't sleep

much better that you get him out of bed and stay with him - at least you can both relax bit

you can't make him sleep - but some quiet time on the sofa will help and he may drift off
