Nearly 6 year old has to have Men C and Hib Booster again, is this right?

The nurse seemed so bloody confused when I rang after getting a letter saying I had to bring dd2 along for a Men C and Hib booster. She basically had this just before starting school, so about 18 months ago. Just wondered if anyone else has had to be done again (ie is she really due the injections again?). If so, surely my 8 year old has to have them too but the nurse didn't think so. Like I say, she couldn't work out really why but did say she thought there were some cases of Men C recently which made re-vacinating a good idea. Of course she only had to mention Men C and I booked but am now worried she's being 'over vacinated' if the nurse didn't really know if she should go or not.
Anyone??

the last hib/men c jabs are given at around 1 year old.

That's what I have in my red book which is why I questioned it with the nurse but she gave me a flimsy 'well we should do it if you've had a letter' kind of reply. Which is why I'd love to know if anyone else has been recalled, don't really trust this nurse's opinion.

My DD had hers in teh summer as part of her pre-school booster (MMR, Polio/tetanus/whooping cough) The nurse said to her as we were leaving - don't worry that's it now until you're 15!

PfftTheMagicDragon · 10/03/2009 12:46

Janus, I have just has DS's letter through for his pre-school MMR and DTP, which I was expecting and there is also a men c on there as well, which I was not. This has confused me too!

Flier · 10/03/2009 12:48

In scotland there was a change which meant that DS had to get a "catch up" additional booster of HIB/Men C just as he turned 5, perhaps it is something similiar?

pagwatch · 10/03/2009 12:49

Ummm
she doesn't have to have them.
If you are unsure then decline until they convince you.
I have always thoughtthe protection offered by the man c jab is pretty ropey which is why DD hasn't had it.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 10/03/2009 12:53

Indeed, pagwatch.

I suspect it might be because there is now a 12 month men c jab, which I am pretty sure wasn't around when DS was that age. Maybe they are slotting it in now, after all, what on earth could be wrong with just stabbing them full of as many jabs as possible?

Sawyer64 · 10/03/2009 13:00

They all need a Hib Booster, which they have missed out on usually,so its really this your DD needs. They just don't make it singuarly now.

Your DD will probably have had 3 Men C's as a tiny baby, and 3 Hibs with the DTP. They then did a catch-up with a Hib Booster, which she may have missed,(you would see it in your Book, listed as a single jab)

If she hadn't already had her pre-school Booster, then they would have added it in with that, but as she has already, the only way for her to have a Hib Booster is this way.

Sawyer64 · 10/03/2009 13:04

If she was below 2.5 yrs she would have had it at 12mths as was previously said. But the last time she had a Hib was 4 mths old.

Janus · 10/03/2009 13:22

She has had her pre-school booster (she's nearly 6) but I think at that stage they didn't add in the HIB booster which I believe they do now. I have just rung Child Health and she has explained that those born around 2003 have missed out on the HIB booster and so they are doing it now (and they only make the one with HIB and MenC combined so she has to have both). Seems such a crap thing to do to a 6 year old and I so wished she'd had it done when 4 and didn't really know quite what an injection was!! Not really looking forward to it but I am a 'believer' in imunisation having had a meng scare so will take her and bribe her with chocolate!
Thanks for your help ladies.

Ds2 is 6 and I haven't heard anything about him needing any more injections. His last lot were the ones they have just before they start school.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 10/03/2009 13:46

Sawyer, maybe you can help me?

for the infant jabs, they have the DTaP/IPV/Hib vaccination, but then as a pre-school booster they have the DTaP/IPV with a separate Hib/MenC (if born at the wrong time as they would have had this at 12 months otherwise).

If what they really need is the hib and you can't get it separately on the NHS, why don't they have the DTaP/IPV/Hib for pre-school instead of the DTaP/IPV with a separate Hib/MenC, which means an extra vaccination.

I am totally confused. I want DS to have the measles part of the MMR jab, which he will. but now I am faced with possibly having to make him have 2 additional jabs also, he is very reluctant to do such things.

Sawyer64 · 10/03/2009 14:30

I can only guess its what your surgery order in.

We have been supplied the DTaP/IPV with Hib.We have to draw up the Hib into the DTaP/IPV.We only give this to Children born before 2003,as this was before the Hib/Men C Booster.

In our Practice we don't give the preschool Booster with Hib/Men C,as the Preschool Booster is available with Hib as I've said.

Has your child had their Preschool Booster yet?

PfftTheMagicDragon · 10/03/2009 18:57

No he hasn't. I have no desire for him to have the MenC but want him to have enough parts of the DTP to have it so do you think I can just ask for the DTaP/IPV/Hib instead of the 2 separate vax? He was born in 2005, btw.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 10/03/2009 18:58

Thank you, Sawyer and sorry Janus for the hijack

Sawyer64 · 10/03/2009 20:47

I don't see why not. They should stock it anyway really.

Its a shame you aren't in my area,as we are running a Mobile Immunisation Unit for 8 weeks, working Mon-Sat 9.30am-4.30pm,trying to improve the take-up of MMR mainly, but also offering any Child Immunisation,and/or advice. Its linked to the dept.by PC,that store all the info on your childs vaccination status.

Hopefully it will start all around the country.
