Dd2 ok? Chest going up and down and bad cold.

Dd2 has a bad cold but sounds wheezy. Her chest is visibly going up and down and she's been drifting in and out of sleep this afternoon. I've been trying to get through to doc's to no avail. Could she be asthmatic? She had a chest infection quite recently and seems to pick up a lot of colds.

She may have repiritory distress and you should get her to A&E now.

rubyslippers · 09/03/2009 16:46

i think you shoudl take her to A & E

Could be bronchilitis

Divineintervention · 09/03/2009 16:52

fivecandles · 09/03/2009 16:56

Let us know how she is. Hopefully just a big cold, but far better safe...glad you are going/gone to A&E. Hope she's ok!

Thanks for your thoughts. Dp took her to walk in centre. They said she has a chest infection and have given her ABs. I was reassured but she's still having difficulty breathing and is breathing fast and noisily. It's only nurses at the walk in centre (who are able to prescribe). Do you think it's worth taking her to A & E? What is bronhiowatsit?

if shes breathing quickly, noisey please take her back.
Please keep an eye if her chest is drawing in under her rib or her thoart is pulling in, make sure you take her back.

bronchiolitis is a viral infection, where the teeny bronchioles (end bits of tubes in lungs, as far as I remember, put very roughly!) get inflamed and fill with fluid, making it hard to breathe. It can be a nasty virus you treat at home, or it can require hospital care and support with oxygen etc.

dd2 had it at 4 weeks and was very ill with it, hospitalized for a week. Others I know have just felt rotten for a few days at home. Either way, if its a possibility (any cold with wheezing/coughing/difficulty breathing could be, tbh) worth checking out her oxygen levels and seeing a doctor. Did the nurses check her O2 levels, or just listen to her chest?

Also, how old is your dd? And has she been throwing up feeds (if she's a baby)?

fivecandles · 09/03/2009 21:36

She's 4. I've sent dp to A & E with her and I'm staying with dc1. Thought it's better to be safe than sorry. And she couldn't sleep or get comfortable because she was finding it so uncomfortable to breathe. Waiting to hear now. No nurses didn't check o2. How would they do that? Thanks for all your replies.

Hope dd is OK - sounds like pneumonia if chest is visibly going up and down keep us posted

lisad123 · 09/03/2009 21:51

keep us posted

mummytopebs · 09/03/2009 21:52

Hope she is ok x Did they check her sats levels, see how much oxygen in the blood, they do this by putting a machine on thumb or toe

lisad123 · 09/03/2009 21:58

y dd2 has pnemonia just before christmas, its horrible but hoping your LO is ok

Sawyer64 · 09/03/2009 22:00

The nurse would have put a peg like thing on her finger to measure her Oxygen level.

My DD1 had Pneumonia in Jan 08 when she was 3.5yrs,sounds worrying, but because she is over 2 yrs,its alot less worrying,my DD just needed to be hospitalised for 48hrs to have intravenous AB's.

Her heart rate would be fast as all the extra breaths she is taking will be quite alot of effort.

They don't normally treat Bronchilitis, but if it interferes with her eating etc. they take them in to monitor and help them.

She's in the right place to get treatment now,but your DP may need to stay in with her,if they keep her in,so you'll need to take an overnight bag in to him,or get someone to,maybe.

Much less likely to be bronchiolitis at 4, I think....dd1 had the same virus as dd2, she was 4 at the time and it was just a bad cough with a cold. No temp, and barely missed a day of pre-school (they all had it there too, and were fine).

Does sound more like pneumonia or a bad chest infection, and oxygen levels are monitored as someone said by putting a probe on toe or finger - easily done, just needs the machinery. A&E will do that, I'm sure. Its good she's started the ABs already, I hope she's home tonight and you all get a decent night's sleep....well done for sending her in, think you've done the right thing!

Dd much better now. Finally got a paediatric doctor to see her at A & E. They have given her a nebuliser to use every 4hrs and various other drugs. They don't think she's asthmatic think her problems breathing were a just a side effect of a chest infection. But said to take her to GP if continues. Thanks for your kind messages last night. Very comforting.

Elibean · 10/03/2009 12:58

I'm glad she's better, sounds like you did all the right things

And hope she, and DI's ds, are much better soon.
