Help please - dd's tummy bug

Dd (4) has been throwing up since Saturday morning. We saw the doc on Saturday and he said it's a virus, been doing the rounds, she might get worse (diarrheoa) before it gets better and just to let her sip water, maybe try some dry toast.

Yesterday, she kept being sick - mainly water. Today she's slept pretty much all day. Every so often she wakes up and has a little water. I've asked her a few times if she wants to try some toast but she says no. The only thing she's asking for is yoghurt.

So, I'm assuming the yoghurt is a bad idea, yes?

And should I keep pushing the toast until she says she wants it?

I am having the same problem here, dd2 was sick a lot in the night last night and all she wants is yogurt, definate nono, we are trying toast and crisps, that kind of thing.

midnightexpress · 09/03/2009 14:01

Yogurt is Ok I think - plain yogurt anyway - could you do plain ygurt with some banana mashed in?

Hope your DD is feeling better soon. DS1 had the same thing last week - Tuesday till Saturday, and couldn't keep anything down. We eventually went back to the old BRATY thing (banana, rice, apple, toast, yogurt) and knocked it onthe head. No squits though .

midnightexpress · 09/03/2009 14:02

crisps?

I think the most important thing is to keep her fluids up - sips of drink, ice lollies etc.

squeaver · 09/03/2009 14:05

Oh hadn't thought of crisps - might give that a go. Crackers didn't work yesterday.

will try banana too.

Thanks guys.

my dd is drinking plenty,I thought dry food was the way forward. she is after fruit as well but I think it is the sugars that cause the bug to keep going, I wait to e corrected as I am only going on memory.
I desperatley want dd to be better for tommorow as it is her birthday.

squeaver · 09/03/2009 14:07

oh your poor dd, sock. Hope she's better by then

Why not yoghurt if that's what she wants? I would give her tiny spoonfuls - if she hasn't been sick again today then she's getting over it, and a little taste of something she fancies might tempt her to try something else.

I really wouldn't give crisps - the can't be easy to digest, surely?

thesockmonsterofdoom · 09/03/2009 14:10

I know, she is having her first party with her little toddler friends and it will be so lovely. keeping everything crossed. My mum always used to give me crisps.

squeaver · 09/03/2009 14:12

I was only thinking of no yoghurt because you're supposed to avoid dairy with a stomach upset aren't you?

Have sent dh out for ice lollies for me sick child.

I phoned nhs direct last night as my ds1 has the same thing. Was sick last wed-thurs but still has the squits. I wanted to know what foods to give and the nurse said that although sweet things arent as good as starchy carbs if its what they are asking for to give it as some food is better than no food. And milk and yoghurts are ok to give. She also said the squits could take a week to clear.

I let my ds1 have those salt and shake crisps without the salt. He also had some organix crisps today.

I also gave him isotonic juice diluted about 50/50 with water. But I woud suggest that if you do that you give her water in its own too.

I've just about figured how to get ds1 better and now ds2 has it and he's only 6 months old.

castille · 09/03/2009 14:53

I second what Debi says - if yoghurt is what what she wants, let her have some (very slowly, in tiny mouthfuls). I can see the attraction - it's cold and requires no effort. I'd stir a little bit of sugar into natural yoghurt, if she'll eat that. It might even boost her good gut bacteria!

Hope she's better soon.

Thanks so much.

Well I can definitively report that yoghurt is the wrong thing to try! Probably my fault - it was the only thing to reach her poor blighted little tummy today.

Crisps seem to be going down ok though.

No definitely not yoghurt. Dairy really needs to be avoided if they have a tummy bug as it can make dcs temporarily lactose intolerant and prolongs the vomiting.

I learnt this to my cost last summer when dd2 had a bug which refused to shift and I thought that those probiotic drinks/ yoghurts would be really good for her.
After 10 days of vomiting a dr told us we should avoid all lactose for a week.

YummyMummyTumTums · 20/03/2009 11:00

My 17 month old has a really bad tummy upset, he has had it for 5 days now, with no marked improvement. I took him to the doctors 3 days ago but am going back today as I feel he should be getting better. I seem to agree with the no milk/yoghurt thing, the first couple of days my child had the bug, it was his milk that triggered the vomitting

hippipotamiHasLostNinePounds · 20/03/2009 11:09

I had a nurse recommend crisps. And flat lemonade. She said that you dehydrate when vomiting and your body loses essential salt - so salted crisps are actually a good thing according to her.
Not sure I would fancy crisps when I have a tummy bug but it has got to be more palatable than those awful dioralyte drinks...

dingledangle · 20/03/2009 11:15

Both DD and DS have had this bug(aged 4 and 1).

It seemed to go on forever, 1 week to 10 days. Poor souls.

We were led a bit by them. If they were hungry we let them eat (plain toast/very diluted squash/water) We also found that lemonade helped (sipped slowly/slightly flat) as very sugary (helped with their low energy levels).

Personally would be led by them if they keep being sick we offered food and then if they did not want it left it off. As long as drinking.

I hope you are all coping ok. It seems to go on for eternity but they will get better. If worried speak to GP surgery for advice.

Nasty virus. We all had it and anyone that we saw caught it too.

Best of luck
