blood in 8wk olds poo

A week ago I found some blood in my dds nappy. I was told by gp to come back if it happened again because it would need further investigation. He said it might be blood from my nipples or a small tear in her anus. I took her back as she has had blood in several nappies since. I am waiting to get an appointment with the paediatician but in the mean time I am worrying constantly about what this might be.I don't think it can be blood from me as my nipples aren't even sore. Her poo is also green although i've been told this isn't a problem. Does anyone else have experience of this?

bumping for you.

Could you ring your health visitor?

Is it fresh blood (red) or old blood (brown)? Does it coat the poo or is it mixed in? A large or small amount? Does she appear to be in pain when passing a stool? Feeding and putting on weight normally?

birthjoy · 08/03/2009 19:45

as a non-practicing Registered nurse I know blood from nipples if swallowed changes colour and would be black when it comes out the other end. it could be a small tear but doubtful unless her stools very hard - very unlikely if breastfeeding. Green poo makes me wonder if her food is going through her system too fast i.e. a tummy bug which may make her gut sore which may then bleed. is she well in herself? gaining weight and feeding well? If it doesn't settle soon it needs investigation. I'd want GP to send a stool sample to look for infection.

I think you will find that it is a fact that baby girls can have 'periods' when they are born, which take the form of a little bleeding. I remember this happening with my baby sister many years ago.

birthjoy · 08/03/2009 21:14

periods are usually seen in the first few days after birth, but i suppose it can happen later.

Is there any possibilty you little one could be Lactose intolerant?

My DD had blood in her poo and I always thought she must have torn her bum. But after her being diagnosed with LI it made sense.

mumnanny1 · 09/03/2009 18:51

It is sometimes red but more often is browny red and sort of mucousy looking. She has been gaining weight well at least 8 oz a week
but last week she gained 4oz.The of amount of blood varies, sometimes a tiny amount and sometimes up to 2tsp roughly. She looks often like she is straining when she poos, which is weird given that it is runny (sorry if tmi.Sometimes she seems to have crying fits and nothing seems to calm her down but they don't seem to relate to when she poos. Also the blood isn't in every nappy. Chellesgirl- I have been reading up on lactose intolerance and that does seem like it could be a possibility also a cows milk protein intolerance. I have given up eating dairy, so we will see. Thank you so much for your replies.I am going to see the health visitor on wed so maybe she will have an idea of what could be going on.

The mucousy bit sounds right too for a lactose/milk protein intolerance.

My dd has both nut the doc can take samples and have the poo tested for an intolerance.

Giving up the dairy is really good of you!
But you have to watch out for the milk protiens in things like gravy/ready made meals/some seasonings. If you are breastfeeding as you say you are then these wont hurt in small doses as your body will consume the majority.

My dd used to cry for no reason...as we thought! Now we feel so sorry for her as we made her put up with it (or should I say the health visitor did) I took her to doc in the end - although they ran no tests and took my word for it, they prescribed her LF formula. No discussions nothing on helping BF her with this allergy.

But hope everything goes well on Wed and you get some answers for your little one.

mumnanny1 · 09/03/2009 21:15

Have just eaten gravy. I didn't even consider that! This is only day 1 and I am realising that milk proteins are in everything. How old is your daughter now Chelles? Did the formula sort everything out?

Yes the formula worked wonders she was such a happy baby after that. I watch carefully what she eats. I make her dinners myself although some jar foods such as cow'n'gate, hip organic and mum's own do, do 'no added milk'.

(The bisto gravy powder -the brown box has no added milk products.)

My little one is 13 months now.

Thanks for your help. Have omitted the diary for five days now and no effect. I'm going to keep it up though because it can apparently take 2-3 weeks to get through the system. The health visitor wasn't greatly helpful. Said try not to worry could be due to cracked nipples or a tear. Hoping the appointment with the paediatrician comes soon.

Yes hun, get that appointment with the pead. HV are so not helpful in this situation.

Id give it at least 3 weeks before you may notice any changes as you are still breastfeeding. Your dd's tummy needs time to adjust to the new diet.
But hopefully you can get an answer before that.

Chellesgirl · 14/03/2009 00:39

'Infants who have a cow' milk protein allergy may have blood in the stool (poop, poo), but they will probably have other symptoms as well, such as poor growth, irritability and maybe even a skin rash.'

Btw has she got spots/rash on her body?
