I've always heard people saying 'I don't want X to catch a chill' but never quite worked out what they mean. Can anyone enlighten me please?

I believe it means the same as catching a cold, in the belief, although wrong, that being cold means that you will get a cold

no idea, I always thought it was bollocks dreamt up by grandparents! my mil said she had a chill in her back the other day, whatever that is...

I think that's some evidence to suggest that if yuou are cold you are more susceptible to devoloping a cold if you come into contact with the virus.

So it's just an excuse not to hunt around for appropriate footwear and outdoor clothes?

I've also heard older people use the word if a child has wet themselves ie "Do you think they might have a chill?"
So I wondered if it might be a sort of UTI?
