scan appointment for ds after blood in urine

Hi i posted on here this week already about my 2 yo ds who had blood in his urine. After a terrible week of going back and forward to the gp and hospital and me panicking beyond belief i got a call from the x-ray department telling mr they have an appointment for my ds on Monday. Although i'm pleased that he is being seen soon i'm really worried that they might be thinking its serious. I've spoken to the gp who referrred him and he said they just wanted to cross the t's and dot the i's and to be sure they have'nt missed anything and also because of my anxiety over this. He been examined by 4 different doctors who all say that everything feels fine but i still can't stop worrying. He is healthy in himself although 2 weeks ago he was unwell with a bad cough, fever and lethargy. I have extreme health anxiety for which i'm receiving treatment. I need to know if i'm being totally over the top with my worrying or if other mothers would be feeling as bad as me. I've barely been able to eat and have lost 9 pounds in 5 days.

Just like to add that my ds urine sample came back clear, no blood present and that the gp said that they are not really expecting anything untoward to come from the ultrasound.

thanks for any replies, i'm sure i must seem like a comlpete freak. but i'm in such a state over this.

I am sorry - I didn't see your previous thread so I appologise if i am saying something which has already been discussed.

Have they considered a Strep infection? Strep infections can cause a sore throat (re the cough) a fever and lethargy. It can also lead on to scarlet fever (which presumably he didn't have because he would have had a rash). BUT one complication of any strep infection is Glomerulonephritis which can cause blood in the urine.

Please be cautious when googling....this condition is basically a complication of many many many other things and in this case (if it is this) it is probably just associated with his prior illness - and will not be a long term problem - it already seems to be better if he has had a clear urine result.

kaylasmum · 07/03/2009 17:55

slightlymadscotland, thanks for you reply. Nobody has mentioned a strep infection, he did have a cough, but not sure about a sore throat. He was started on the anti-b's before we got the sample as we had been trying for 2 days almost to get one and did'nt want to wait too long to start him on them. He'd had 3 doses by the time we got the sample so not sure whether that would have made a difference to the results or not.

My health anxiety seems to focus on cancer so i convince myself of the worst thing possible.

What do you mean by him having blood in his urine? Do you mean that you could visibly see it? or did something else trigger your first visit to the GP. (I'm just wondering, because you said that there wasnt any blood when they tested the sample?)

For what its worth, having had a couple of occassions with an ill child myself, my experience is that doctors dont try to reassure you if they are worried, IYSWIM. If they thought it was something I dont think they would be lying to you.

kaylasmum · 07/03/2009 18:49

hi tiggerslovetobounce, last sunday evening we noticed there was blood in his nappy, to me it looked like a lot. we took him to the out of hours doctor who said it was a urine infection and there sa blood in the nappy, 2+ of blood which another doctor went on to say was only a trace and that a little blood goes a long way. We've been seen by 5 doctors, 2 who were paediatricians. The abdominal examinations were all fine apart from one of the doctors saying he could feel my ds bladder, not sure what he meant by that but the paediatrician we saw after him did'nt seem to think this was a problem nor did the other gp we saw the following day who examined him also. After 3 days we got the sample when my hv came round and put a urine bag on him, she dipped it and said it was clear. The rest was sent off to the lab and came back clear also. Now we have a scan on monday and i'm worried that they think its serious, even though the gp did say they are not expecting to hear anything untoward from it.

sorry if i'm repeating myself but my heads all over the place with this.

My DD had a UTI and then had to have a kidney scan. Where I am they do them in all the children under 5 who have a UTI, its mainly because they want to see if the kids have reflux, rather than suspecting anything sinister.
Hope that your DS scan goes well. When my DD had hers we got the results as soon as the scan was finished, so there was no waiting to find out how it had gone.

kaylasmum · 07/03/2009 19:07

the thing is one of the doctors said that she did'nt think it was a urine infection and the sample came back clear, so this has obviously made me feel more anxious, as doesthe quick scan appointment, although i did practically beg the gp to arrange a scan as soon as possible. I'm worried that because i've told the doctors that i'm worried about cancer thats made them think its a possibility. Though one of the doctors that examined my ds did say he could feel no mass on either kidney.

I think i just need someone to tell me to stop being so stupid, because of my anxiety i think my thoughts are warped. Last year my son needed an ultrasound on his back because of a lump. i'd convinced myself that he had a rhabdomyosarcoma, it turned out to be a fatty tissue.

did you wait long for your dd's scan?

OP posts:
tiggerlovestobounce · 07/03/2009 19:18

I cant remember exactly how long we had to wait for the scan - maybe 4 weeks?
From what you have written it sounds like they may have asked for the scan to be done quickly because of how worried you are? You worrying that it is cancer wouldnt on its own make them think it was any more likely to be cancer.

I was worried that was what my DD had too. But UTIs are so much more common than cancer, and it isnt unheard of for samples to come back clear, especially after a few days of antibiotic treatment.

kaylasmum · 07/03/2009 19:40

thanks, its so hard being a parent is'nt it? I have 5 kids my older 3 are 24,22 and 17 and i was'nt this bad when they were younger, but i had no internet then. I just have to try to calm down.

Hi Kaylasmum-have posted on your other thread.

Please try not to worry-I really think it was probably just an infection that had cleared by the time you managed to get the sample. If it was something serious, the urine test would be continuing to show some abnormality I would think.

You have a family like mine by the way-I have 5 DSs, ranging in age from 27 down to 10!

kaylasmum · 08/03/2009 09:34

Hi tiggiwinkle, thanks for getting back to me. I have 3 girls and 2 boys, you would think i'd be a lot calmer about their health after having so many but since my last 2 were born i have been very anxious, i think i'm like this as my dad died a year sfter my 5 year old was born. He had multiple sclerosis for about 35 years and i helped to look after him a lot especially in the last few years before he died. My faith in doctors is'nt too good because my dad went into hospital with a urine infection and ended up dying of pneumonia, so i think all of this has had an impact on my mental health. I also suffer intermittantly from depression.

I know that it seems good that my ds urine sample was clear but a couple of the doctors seem to think that it was'nt a urine infection as there were no other symptoms. I keep trying to think positively but fail miserably.

sorry for being a nuisance but i just need someone to talk to, i'm so scared for my son i can hardly breath. Everything i've read about wilms tumour seems to coincide with my son. I know that i should be reassured by the doctors but i've read so many stories about children diagnosed with wilms that starts off with blood in the urine. I think i'm going mad.

please if anyone can calm me dowm it would be much appreciated.

DaisyMooSteiner · 08/03/2009 15:43

It is very, very, very unlikely to be Wilms' Tumour.

If it IS (very big 'if') then Wilms' Tumour is highly treatable. I used to do research on these kinds of tumours and the vast majority of them are cured.

kaylasmum · 08/03/2009 15:51

thanks for that, i know its very rare but i'm terrified, i'm struggling to think rationally and can't get the horrible thought s out of my mind.

Take some deep breaths. I totally know where you're coming from wrt health anxiety. Turn off the computer and go and do something that will keep you busy and distract you. I try and put my anxiety in a sort of mental box and just let it out once a day for a short time. Your appointment is tomorrow, so you haven't got long to wait before you can stop worrying.

kaylasmum · 08/03/2009 16:00

i'm actually getting cbt at the moment for my anxiety, i thought i was doing well but obviosly not. i'm so scared.

OP posts:
DaisyMooSteiner · 08/03/2009 16:05

Well things have a habit of coming along and upsetting things when you're doing well. This is a hiccup, but you are going to be fine and your little boy will be fine too.

Now go and do something else and come back tomorrow and tell us how it went.

kaylasmum · 08/03/2009 17:05

thanks again, as you can see i'm still on here torturing myself! i think i need to be locked up!

OP posts:
Tiggiwinkle · 08/03/2009 22:38

Good luck for tomorrow Kaylasmum-I am sure everything will be fine!

DaisyMooSteiner · 09/03/2009 18:22

How did it go kaylasmum?

kaylasmum · 09/03/2009 20:49

Just wanted to let everyone know how my ds scan went. Luckily it was a doctor who did the scan so he was able to tell there and then, he said that there was a spot of immflamation on my ds's right kidney and that it was nothing to worry about and it could have been down to infection and that sometimes these things just happen. It was a huge relief,no sign of any tumours or masses as i had been so worried about.

I just need to sort my anxiety out as it has really been over the top this time and i know its hard for my family to cope with.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words and reassurance it meant so much to me.

So glad, Kaylasmum. Been thinking about you this afternoon and hoping all was well. It's completely reassuring that they've had a good look inside and ruled out the things you were worried about (I speak as a fellow complete panicker over anything to do with the health of those I love - it doesn't make for an easy life does it!)

Try to relax tonight now.

Tiggiwinkle · 09/03/2009 21:11

So pleased to hear that everything is OK Kaylasmum. Now relax-have a rest, eat some nice treats to put that weight back on, and look after yourself.

kaylasmum · 09/03/2009 21:57

Thanks for that tiggiwinkle, don't know about putting the weight back on, i'm overweight and could still do with losing a good bit more. At least i'll be able to relax a bit more and stop coming on here like some raving lunatic. Thanks for all your support its been much appreciated.

Merryponymum - thanks for being concerned, yeah lifes not easy at all when your a worrier. Definately time to relax now, just hope its a long time until the next crisis.
