Another brown inhaler question

DS1 has been on his brown inhaler for nearly a month now and his cough (last night at least) seems better. Now - does this mean that the brown inhaler is kicking in and easing his symptoms, or is he better and can we reduce the puffs?

Sorry if this is a silly question but we have no history of inhaler use in our family and I think the dr is sick of the sight of me... croup then suspected asthma all in a month

This is really tricky.

DD is on a brown inhaler, and I give her one puff twice a day, but increase it to 2 puffs when she's starting to get ill...

The asthma nurse said to keep up the brown inhaler until after the winter months and then review.

Not a silly question at all, scrambledhead. I have asthma myself (not DS at the moment) and basically, it's a question of slowly try it and see. No-one knows at this stage what will be the right long term dose for your DS, (might be none at all, but might be a regular intake) Take advice from your GP to help you find it. From my own experience with adult asthma, I'd be in no immediate rush to reduce the brown inhaler dosage, though you may be able to do a couple of weeks down the line. If it's working, let it really work properly before you tinker with it too much.

Asthma inhalers are really good medicines - they work well and have very few side effects. They are far better than poorly controlled asthma, so really try not to worry about your DS taking them. The important thing is to get control of the asthma, and that sometimes takes time to find the right dose.

Thanks for advice and reassurance. I think I'll give it a few weeks then.
