hi I think I'm going mad. my ds has had bouts of the runs, temp, loss of appeite since born. He's 2 now and up until now we put problems down to teething but it continues. He's now badly anemic and on iron but iron is supposed to make you constipated,he's still passing undigested food as yellow poos. been tested for celiac, allergies all negative and I'm beginning to think I'm a hydocondriac!he looks so ill and is starting to lose weight but as allergy test results were normal Dr doesn't seem concerned. He's on a good diet, was breastfed and sympyoms don't seem to correspond to toddler diarrhoea.I don't know why he's so aneamic and been so for a while, I'm getting worried, Do you think I should be?

Hi there
I don't know what the answer is but I'd recommend calling Genova Diagnostics and arranging a stool test. www.genovadiagnostics.com/index.php?option=com_gpanel&Itemid=2&task=view&nav=test&id=4

I think they're pretty helpful so if you rang them and explained the symptoms and history they should recommend which of their tests is the relevant one. And you can hopefully then find out what you can do to put things right. It sounds no fun for your poor ds and very stressful for you.

Best of luck for a speedy resolution.

Thanks for that I'll look into it.Our health visitor has now referred him to a dietician as he's fallen 2 centile sections on his chart. We feel we now have support and not being fobbed off. She's requested a stool test like you've suggested and was suprised that our Dr didn't!hence we're changing Dr's.You've helped thanks, don't feel so paranoid now!

Has he been tested for giardia?

he sounds just like my dd. she has a wheat intolerance, it's not an allergy so doesn't show up on blood tests. the effect is so obvious though that even a previously sceptical barrage of docs were convinced. when we took wheat out of her diet she gained 2kgs in less than 2 months immedietly, started passing proper stools and had a complete personality change.

when she has wheat it damages her gut in such a way that other food isn't absorbed either so she stops growing, passes loose undigested stools and is in pain and cranky all the time. she also has very low iron levals.

from the age of 12 months until 22 months she gained no weight at all and at her smallest she weighed the same as my then 6 month old ds1

i'm glad your HV is good, our PHN [HV] was a godsend who helped get us a paeds referral and then when it was taking months for dd to be seen she and the dietician caused a fuss and had her bumped up the list to be seen.

dieticians are great too, they're far more aware than the docs about the host of food intolerances that might not be allergies but can be just as severe. doctors can be very black and white in the way they view thing.

at the end of the day you know there's something wrong so please don't let anyone make you doubt yourself... don't be afraid to be pushy and aggressive with them if needsbe to get him diagnosed and treated.

it might be no harm to test him out yourself at home... try a week with no wheat, one with no dairy, etc. the differance is immediate when the cause is removed from the diet so it should be obvious within 24 hours if you've found the cause... it might not help but it can't hurt can it?

my heart goes out to you, we were where you are 2 years agon and it's emotionally exhausting. i hope you find the cause soon and you ds starts to feel better.

Oh that's good news. Best wishes for some useful info. Do you know what they will be testing for? Hopefully they'll look at a few different things at the same time and get lots of things covered off at once - coeliac; wheat, dairy, soya intolerance (all the common ones); parasites; leaky gut etc

ra29needsabettername · 10/03/2009 14:00

I would also wonder about coeliac disease...

We're seeing new Dr tomorrow, after 2 weeks on iron he's showing signs of improvement for aneamia but upset stomach just the same. I think you are all wonderful and this week for the first time in ages I feel more positive.I will definitely try to cut out more things, we did milk and tho some improvement there was still a problem. I have a feeling it's more than one thing and wheat is next on the list. It's just weird how it comes in cycles, ok for a bit, eats loads, stops eating, diarrhea and ill then it starts over again. He gets itchy sometimes on his stomach too.thanks again and in the meantime I'll look into your suggestions.

Cyclical element might mean parasites as they die off, then next lot come to life etc, so symptoms can come and go. Hopefully they will check for parasites in stool test and I think treatment to get rid of them is then pretty straightforward. Good that his iron levels are improving
