Pin prick/goosebump like rash in 11mo baby

She has had the rotavirus for the last few days, hideous diarrhea, fever etc but has seemed fine in herself.

This evening she has developed a pin prick rash that looks a bit like goosepimples apart from not as close together. It blanches so not panicking but have phoned NHS Direct and waiting for a call back.

Is this likely to just be a viral rash?

Is it red, stronger in teh folds of the skin like armpits, behind knees, and nappy area? Does it look like sunburn?

If it is any of teh above it could be Scarlett fever which is characteristically looks like sunburn, but with goosebumps

HeadFairy · 03/03/2009 20:23

Sounds like it to me. I can't remember if you can give Piriton to under 1s, but it's a good way to check if it's viral, if it is then the piriton won't get rid of it.

EllieG · 03/03/2009 20:23

My 10 month old had a virus a month ago and at end of it was covered in a red pin prick rash - tiny tiny dots all over her chest and back. Took her to A&E cos I am a panicy mummy and the nice doc said not to worry if it blanches is a 'good, healing, post-viral rash, not a bad rash' - if your DD does not have a temp and is otherwise OK, and the rash blanches, I reckon is fine. But obviously take to doc if worried still x

Oh I forgot to say the doc also said is never silly to get rashes checked out, even if they do blanch though.

Ewe · 03/03/2009 20:27

Doesn't look like sunburn so don't think it is that, the bumps are slightly raised though.

I am home on my own so don't have a second opinion which makes it feel like a big judgement call on my own. The virus she has can be nasty so I guess it is probably that, will keep checking it as keep questioning myself about how "well" it blanched!

Hopefully NHS direct will call back with reassurance.

A general "post viral rash seems likely though. That typically looks like heat rash - though not always.

Ewe · 03/03/2009 20:30

It does look just like heat rash. I would know if it was something nasty like measles wouldn't I?

If she were really ill she would probably also seem more poorly IYSWIM - be lethargic and floppy and crying

SlightlyMadScotland · 03/03/2009 20:35

Yup.

I am pretty sure that Measels affects the eyes too.

TBH the only thing that I can think of that would need treating tonight and wouldn't wait until tomorrow is meningitis - which it is not if it is blanching.

Yes, that was my train of thought too, she isn't lethargic but has been sleeping a lot but when awake very happy toddling about, playing with toys etc so I am hoping it is just viral rash.

Do you think it is worth taking her to GP tomorrow or would I just be being socially irresponsible taking her out as it is fairly contagious?

Ewe · 03/03/2009 20:38

I had that too... It was lots of stuff that looks like this

Cathpot · 03/03/2009 21:19

Am reading with interest as I have a 2 year old with the same things. Its all over her except her face, palms and feet, its been there 3 days, looks worse after a bath and blanches when I push on it. She is a bit off colour with a cough etc. I showed it to two friends who are paediatric nurses and they thought it was 'non specific viral rash' and not to worry. I think if there are no other symptoms that is the most likely. Can you post what NHS say??

Ewe · 03/03/2009 21:20

Hey ld! It is horrid, one thing after another at the moment

It does look a bit like that link but spots not so close together. Will take her to GP's in the morning I think, better safe than sorry and all that.

NHS Direct are apparently exceptionally busy and it may take over 4 hours for a call back just called as it had been a while.

I'll be in bed by then!

OP posts:
SlightlyMadScotland · 03/03/2009 21:42

Cathpot - does it look like "sunburn"? and worse in teh folds of the arms legs etc? In your case I specifically mention it as Scarlett fever almost always follows a throat infection and you mention a cough.

Ewe · 03/03/2009 22:16

NHS Direct called back and ruled out the nasties, just suggested I take her to GP in the morning for reassurance.

Is the rash bumpy/raised CP?

littleducks · 04/03/2009 11:36

what was dr's verdict today?

Ewe · 04/03/2009 22:34

viral/post viral rash, now all over her body but apparently very normal. She is so clingy though, I am shattered!

My ds had this exact same thing this week. Rash lasted a couple of days then he was fine
