My DS2 (6months) has been seen by our GP and diagnosed with an inguinal hernia, we have an appointment to see the consultant at the end of April...but in the mean time I'm getting more and more worried - should we wait that long to see a consultant and then wait again to have the op? Am sat worrying about all the things that could go wrong... we've just come out of spending 10days in children's hospital with DS1 who had an infection that nearly killed him - so I'm a little raw from that and cant seem to see any health probs rationally. Am dreading going back to the children's hospital.

Has anyone had a DS with and inguinal hernia? Could you tell me what happened? and how long it took to treat and heal?

Thank you

Hi Gledhill,
My ds had one of these at 7 weeks. It swelled up and looked like a bruised kind of lump on his groin. He was seen straight away at St Thomas Hospital and operated on the next day. If you see a lump and it gets bigger by the hour, get to A&E. If no lump then he's fine to wait (this was what I was told at the time). I'd push for earlier appointment though because you will feel better about getting it over with. They're very common and nothing to worry about in the long run. Ds was in and out of surgery within less than an hour. He was "glued" not stitched and his recovery was almost immediate
He's 12 now and has never had any problems, you can see the scar with a magnifying glass.
Just keep an eye on the area and feel/watch out for a lump. The op is no "biggy" and healing time very quick. Hth

Btw they use keyhole surgery. Basically they place a sort of soft "mesh" over the weak spot to hold all in place. Very very straight forward op. Sorry about your other ds, glad he's ok now. I have spent many a sleepless night in hosp with my dc, not funny I know.
This will be a piece of cake compared to that

Thank you Kaytee. He has a lump that goes back in when he's asleep and then out lots when he's moving around. It's down into his scrotum. It's not bruised and he seems ok in himself.

That's good. Watch the colour of it though. A bruising effect (going purpley blue) can mean that the hernia is strangulating, you would also be alerted to this (unlikey, but feel I should mention it) because he would be screaming so you wouldn't be able to overlook it, iyswim.
I'm sure he's fine, he's sleeping so obviously no pain there
All the very best to you.
