dd on azathioprine (on top of prednisolone) for HSP - anyone with experience?

Following HSP and a kidney biopsy at in Dec last yr my dd has been on prednisolone ( and now been started on azathioprine as well.

The symptoms of the HSP - the rash, tummy pains and joint swelling have gone which is good news, but the protein in her urine is still high - hence the azathioprine.

Was wondering whether anyone had experience - either of HSP and/or of a child being on azathioprine or the pred/aza combination?

Did they get many bugs/infections on this drug? How long were they on it for?

TIA

I am on azathioprine and prednisolone and you are supposed to be more prone to infections and aza in particular can cause viral skin problems like warts. What is hsp?Is it a type of purpura

Hi there ive been on both Prednisolone and Azathoiprine but not at the same time (for something different to).

How old is your dd?

My experience as an adult with prednisolone has not been good as the coating on the red prednisolone tablets actually made my condition worse (suffer with Crohns disease).
Azathioprine though i was on for 5 years once first diagnosed and found it to worked wonders. Yes your dd will be prone to picking things up more and as noddyholder says, i found warts to be my worst problem, but its not really much to contend with if it puts your illness at bay!

I didnt really notice that in the 5 years i suffered with anything else anymore than others. But i would def recommend getting her the flu jab while she is on them just to be on the safe side.

Not a child but my DH is on this combination of drugs. DH has been on this combination since beginning of Jan having been on a more toxic drug alongside the steroids.

DH doesn't seem to have been anymore prone to bugs and in fact, hasn't picked up stuff me and dd have had. Other than his underlying condition he hasn't been ill since being on the various drugs (6 months). I don't know whether this is true in all cases but DH is on them to bring his immune system down from an over-active level and is continuously monitored to make sure it doesn't go too low.

Thanks to everyone for your answers and advice - the infection doesn't sound too bad from what you are saying - which does put my mind at rest.

HSP is henoch schonlein purpura, an autoimmune condition which affects blood vessels and can affect the kidneys in severe cases. Like Wheelybug says the drugs in dds case are there to bring down the overactive immune response.

dd is 6yo btw.

Please can I join this thread?

Just come home from hospital and my 6 year old dd diagnosed with HSP.

At first I thought ok, not too bad. The doc certainly didn't seem too worried but now it's friday night and I'm realising it's potentially very serious.Noone to ask at the weekend.

They did blood test and tested urine. She has abdo pain and was vomiting too but no abdo ultrasound.

Kidney function was normal from blood test.
Slightly low white cell count (over4).

Any tips? Reassurance out there?

Hope all of your little ones are doing well.

I mean I hope your daughter, Scarlet is doing ok with her HSP.

Just reread and realised the others are not children.

I'm sooo tired. Husband is in a difficult and definately serious health situation. And I've been up for many nights with DD being sick and headaches, joint pain.

I think I'm in overdrive.

Just read the earlier posts a second time.

Dismay! This thread is a year old.

Anyone with experience of HSP out there?

Hi, my son (5)has just been diagnosed with this condition. I am very interested and concerned about it and so would appreciate any information from people with experience with this.
