Hi, my 2 yo ds has been unwell for the past week with a high temperature, chesty cough and general lethargy. He has also had very little appetite. When i got home from work tonight about half 6 i went to bath him, his nappy was very wet, my partner had'nt changed him in 7 hours. i noticed that the urine was red coloured so called nhs 24 who suggested it could be a urine infection and that i should tske him to the out of hours doctors. I took his nappy with me and they said it was definately blood and that they could'nt start him on antibiotics until i got a sample from him.i suffer from health anxiety which i'm being treated for and i'm so worried that there could be some sinister reason for the blood. I'm sitting here with my ds on my knee without a nappy on in the hope thst i can catch a sample of urine so that i can get him started on the anti-b's.

Please if anyone has any experience of this with their children can you reassue me.

thanks in advance for any replies.

Thinking on it, did they check your DSs blood pressure when he was seen the other day? Have they ruled out any other cause for the blood-as Noddy said earlier, it can mean things other than an infection.

I think blood in the urine is relativley uncommon in children.

TBH, if you are still concerned I would take him to a and e-you could say you had been told to get s sample but have been unable to do so and are worried. Blood in the urine is sufficiently serious in a little one to warrant that I think. It might also mean you would get the scans etc more quickly if they were ordered by the hospital.

Cross-posted, sorry. There are lots of other things it might be-I was not thinking of a tumour!

Little ones tend not to show pain when weeing with an infection. They are just generally unwell.

Don't delay on giving him the antibios. Just start him but keep trying for a sample.

You really need to go back and talk to someone who makes sense.

kaylasmum · 02/03/2009 18:22

tiggiwinkle when you said about the blood pressure it really scared me as high blood pressure is one of the symptoms of a wilms tumour. don't know what to think or do.

also meant to mention that when the nurse checked my ds temperature she said it was 37.7, is that particularly high?

No-that temp is just above normal.

Any problem with the kidneys can affect blood pressure, that is why I asked.

I'm tempted to take my ds to a+e as i've really got myself worked up, been reading up on cases of wilms tumours and have convinced myself that this is whats wrong with my son.Everything i've read says that in a child of my sons age that blood in the urine is not common. When i spoke to the gp today i asked how long we'd have to wait for a scan and he said it was'nt urgent so was'nt sure. What if we have to wait for weeks and there is something seriously wrong with my ds. How can they say its not urgent.

Take him now, before all the drunks start coming in. I would kick up a fuss until you get some answers as blood in urine is NOT common in children (my Mum is a paediatrician by the way, and I have asked her this before when my dd had lots of UTIs)

Tiggiwinkle · 02/03/2009 22:27

Did you take him Kaylasmum?

hippipotamiHasLostFourPounds · 03/03/2009 18:51

Did you take him? What was the outcome?

Tiggiwinkle · 03/03/2009 19:28

How are things Kaylasmum?

i did'nt take him to a+e but i did take him to my gp the next day who examined him and seemed unconcerned, said that he looked healthy and could feel nothing out of the ordinary during the examination, so i felt a little calmer. Later that afternoon i saw a green discharge in his nappy and i totally panicked, called the gp back and practically begged him to send my ds for a scan there and then. He sent us up to the childrens ward of our local hospital to see th paediatrician. He examined him and said his kidneys felt fine, he could feel no mass but he said he vcoulf feel his bladder but that could be because he is qiute slim. anyway as our childrens ward closes at six, he phoned the next nearest hospital 20 miles away, we have no transport so they paid for a taxi for us. When we got there we were eventually seen by a doctor who also examined him and felt that he seemed healthy and she explained that he'd had 2+ of blood in his nappy and that was'nt very much. I told her that i have health anxiety and that i'd looked on the internet and come up with wilms tumour, she said it was very unlikely and tried to imply that the problem was more with me than my son.

Anyway after being told that we would'nt get a scan done that night or the next day, the doctor said she would like us to try to get a urine sample even although we'd already started him on the anti-b's. We were there for a couple of hours trying to get a sample with no luck so they sent us home with a urine bag on my ds. We left it on all night and when we got up in the morning there was no urine in it, worried because he had'nt passed urine in 14 hours we took him back to the gp who told us to wait until lunchtime and if he still had'nt passed anything then to take him back. Thankfully he did.

My HV came round the next day and put a bag on him and at last we got a sample, its come back clear ans today i had a call from the x-ray department giving him an appointment for monday afternoon, and of course me being the freak that i am i started to panic and called my gp to ask why we'd been given an appointment so soon. He said that they just have to be sure that they have'nt missed anything and that it was also for my reassurance as i've been so anxious. I've not been able to eat for the past week and i've lost 9lbs in five days. I know i am reacting to this in a really extreme way but my anxiety dictates my behaviour. The GP did say that they are not expecting anything to come back but they have to check it out.

I'm so sorry that this post is so long but so much has happened in the past few days and i'm such a wreck over all this.

Hi Kaylasmum-Sorry I did not see this earlier, have not been on here much today.

I am really glad you managed to get your DS seen and all the tests so far have been clear. Did they have any explanation for the blood that was in his urine previously-are they saying it was due to an infection? (Presumably if he did have one it may not have shown up in the test due to the ABs).

So pleased you don't have to wait long for the scan either-hopefully after Monday you will be able to relax about it all. How is you DS now-is he back to his normal self?
