DD2 has a VERY sore/limp arm - any ideas please?

dd2 hurt her arm a couple of months ago and she wasn't using it all, it hung limply down by her side and things like getting her dressed caused her a great deal of pain and distress

we didn't get it seen as it was over a weekend/PH and it seemed to go as soon as it came

well its happened again, MIL is here and is a nurse and DD2 won't even let her near to examine her - its happened today whilst we were out as once again its just hung down the side, she complaining about it being sore and when we bend it there are big yelps etc

we're going to take her to get it seen to tomorrow but was just hoping someone might have a clue what it is

How old is she?

Pulled elbow?? - common in young children usually if they fall while you are holding their hand.

V easy to put it back (for a professional to put back - need to go to A&E for it)

dizzydixies · 01/03/2009 21:22

she's 2.9yrs
DH saying it was done this morning whilst she was mucking about at babygym and he tried to right her from being upside down so it sounds like it might be that

do you know what they'll do to fix it?

might be an idea to give her some ibuprofen before she goes in case they decide to put it back in! ds broke the top of his arm/shoulder and we took him to A&E and that was the first thing they did .. even though he had had calpol! He found it quite distressing being given it from a syringe (rather than a spoon as he is used to) and kicked off ... so I would advise getting any pain in check before you go!

This happened a lot to a friend's two dcs.

They sort of manipulate it back in place in seconds by holding their hand and elbow and push and twist - ish.

But needs to be done by someone who knows what they are doing. So go to A and E.

wuglet · 01/03/2009 21:27

Put a hand on her elbow , hold her hand and turn it. Doesn't hurt at all.

Very very easy to do - some children have problems with it happening all the time and can easily teach parents to do it.

Would go to A&E though they will probably do it in triage as soon as she gets there so shouldn't have to wait long.

Sometimes takes them a while to start using it 'cos they aren't sure if it will hurt but can have miracle instant cure.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 01/03/2009 21:30

My friend ended up being able to do it herself after being shown by an a & e doc friend.

Didn't like to suggest a diy approach though, lol.

dizzydixies · 01/03/2009 21:32

she's had some ibuprofen and is now in bed sleeping so I'll go in the morning

thank you all

when people hurt their collar bones they usually hold their arm down by their side and are very protective of it. Think you really have to go some to break it though

AnyFucker · 01/03/2009 21:39

don't try and do anything yourselves

you cannot diagnose anything over the internet

get her seen by the professionals

dizzydixies · 01/03/2009 21:40

plusone, there wasn't anything that happened that would make me think its that, thank you though

I've had a look at the websites and this pulled elbow sounds exactly right

i'd take her to A&E first thing in the morning,
i regularly see children whose hurt their arms / legs a while ago and the parents wait a while before they take them to get it checked and then after xrayed it has been a tiny fracture.
And sometimes its nothing.
better safe than sorry

bodiddly · 01/03/2009 21:42

that is what happend with our ds worley!

dizzydixies · 01/03/2009 21:45

completely agree worley - will head over once DD1 dropped in at school

it won't do her any harm to sleep tonight though will it? I'd hate to take her over tonight when tomorrow would do

Dizzy, this is what I did to DD2.
Takes seconds to pop back in.

dizzydixies · 01/03/2009 22:25

thanks sibh DH devestated as this is second time its happened and both times its been with him - she's such a wee terror I'm not surprised though

It is unbelievably easy to do though, and DD2 is a very clicky thing. Just putting her vests on or putting her in her car seat can produce all kinds of odd clicky noises. I wonder if some children are more prone to it when they are small?

When I took DD to the doctor, he said her elbow would have clicked back in if I'd left it overnight as it was only slightly out. Has she had some nurofen?

for her and for DH. If it's any consolation to him, I was traumatised too.

Sibh · 01/03/2009 23:25

Aaagh. I have read the whole thread now, honest.
Glad she's asleep.

worley · 02/03/2009 09:59

dd - lets us know how she gets on.
my ds2 is very troublesome and accident prone, but will jump off anything, he tried to jump from the top of the stairs yesterday, will jump off kitchen table, and swings off the curtains. tries to ride his bike off the edge of the patio and down a step, and he is only 2. he does things that never ever occurred to ds1 to do!

dizzydixies · 02/03/2009 18:14

well we took her to A&E this morning as she was still refusing to use it. We waited nearly 2hrs during which she played beautifully and behaved herself, eventually got seen by jnr Dr who got snr Dr to come and manupliate her arm- she was not best pleased at all and has now declared she doesn't like Drs!!

we've just to wait now to see if she starts using it more today and if not back again tomorrow for an appt - she will NOT be best pleased toe end up back there

thank you all
