My 14 month old DS has had a cough on and off now since November. He has been checked 4 times and his chest is all clear.

He started coughing quite alot the night, the night before last, but at 4am this morning it woke him up and then he never really resettled as every time he drifted off it would wake him up again. We put him down earlier than normal for his lunch time nap as he was very grumpy but dint really sleep for coughing. He then dint eat his lunch and was grumpy until i got him back off to sleep late afternoon, but he woke after about an hour and a half and once we got him up he was unconsolible.

He is coughing quite alot and has sounded whizzy on occasion and he is doing this odd thing that makes him go red in the face as if to try and clear a tickly throat.

He has been in bed an hour now, but has already woke once and had to be resettled.

What should we do???

Poor ds, and poor you - I would go to the GP in the morning, and ask about asthma. Some doctors won't diagnose asthma at that age, but if you search for threads about it on MN there are lots of instances of young children, even babies, being helped by inhalers...and a night cough is the most common symptom.

That said, there have been endless bugs and my own 2 yr old has had a pretty much constant cold or cough since November too. But worth checking?? My GP prescribed an inhaler - well, two actually, blue and brown - for dd at about 14 months and said to try them, and see if they made a difference.

One other thought I had, if the throat clearing part is new - he may have a sore throat, or a croupy sort of virus, starting. Have you tried a humidifier in his room? Its the only thing that helped my dd (who turned out not to be asthmatic).
