medicine for reflux? how long before it might work?

Hello! DD (18 mths) had been having some problems with vomitting for the last 9 days. At first, a virus was suspected but now the dr is wondering whether she has reflux (never had it before).

Does anybody have any experience of the use of medication for the treatment of this?

DD has been prescibed ranitidine (Zantac) - how long before we can hope to see a change in her symptoms? The main one has been vomitting at night although she does occasionally throw up after a meal (her appetite at the moment is nonexistent and we're a little worried).

We are very grateful for any replies and anybody's experience. Never had eflux problems before.

Thanks!

i think the ranitidine should start working immediately. i am not sure but i believe it neutralises the acid rather than prevents vomming- the vom is because the oesophagus sphincter is immature?

How does she seem in herself?

I have my fingers crossed that you're correct EPPM. She has woken up but no vomitting and I am waiting to see how she settles down again. It's been a tough time for us all.

She has been generally happy but not quite as bouncy as usual (which has been a mixed blessing given that I've been up during the night cleaning and doing laundry). She has been more tired, but that's too be expected between disturbed sleep and not eating well/very little.

Thanks for the msg.

Well- I know they gave me ranitidine 4 weeks ago for my c-section, and the anaesthatist said it was to neutralise the stomach acid.
As your daughter is a lot older than when mine had reflux, pergaps the GP thinks the avid rather than the sphincter is causing it?

Hopefully one of mn's doctor parents or experts will be along to advise
otherwise go see doc on monday, and ask lots of questions...

It really is no fun when they are waking all night is it? (for us or them)

No sickness last night!

And a ravenous appetite this morning

No, it is difficult to see little ones upset, esp at night when they are confused about what is going on. It is also a hard age because they're not vocalising what is going on... or rather they are, just not in words.

Many thanks EPPM; it is a comfort to hear someone else's opinions. I had done a little bit more searching last night and ranitidine should work within 24 h.

Ta-ra!
