Won't take medicine

DS has a temp of 40 degrees. Complaining of ear ache, sore throat and tummy ache. He won't and never has taken medicine. We've tried disguising it in juice but he's wise to that now and won't drink anything when he's ill.

It's so frustrating as he gets hotter and hotter and in more pain. All he does is scream and shout when we want to take his temperature with one of those ear things that takes three seconds.

Any advice please? Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh. Why does he have to be difficult in every single respect of his very being?

am not recommending this to you, but we have the same problem with DS (ASD) i give him paracetamol suppositories, however i do this with children at work and know how to administer properly, GP was still reluctant to prescribe. however have just done 5 days of anti-biotics hidden in strong juice and can't believe it but he had the lot!
also used to hide in small yogorts, mixing in the least amount so he didn't have to finish it all.
also use ibuprofen as normally less quantitiy to get down!
hope this has helped, hugs during this stressful time x

dd will usually take medicines (except nurofen/calfen, which for some reason she loathes the taste of) in milk or neat, but recently she had a tonsil op and wouldn't take anything: we used paracetamol suppositories, and inserted them mostly while she was asleep - very easy, don't sting, but did have some aqueous jelly for lubrication.

Not much use as advice on a saturday afternoon when you need help NOW, though - I think you have to get a prescription for them.

Ice cream??

Thank you very much for responses.

God, his temp went up to 41 degrees. I was bricking it. Disguising it in banana milk worked this time. He drank it and said, "I don't want medicine, Mummy," so he's wise to that one. But his temp is down to 38 now which is manageable.

I think I'm going to have to wrap him in a towel next time, like giving a cat a pill.

Well done. Its horrible when its going up and up, isn't it? Poor you, I'm glad he took it. I forgot to say, with dd1 I used to be able to use bribery and corruption in the form of chocolate buttons - for a while.

Hope you have a reasonable night, and the next dose is easier. Chocolate milk?!

I posted something similar a few days ago - DS hates medicine too and is on antibiotics at the mo. Some clever MNetters suggested mixing it in yogurt - it has worked a treat so far. Hope your DS is better soon.
