I'm probably being pathetic... but should I take dd1 to the doctor again?

DD1 (4) has had a temperature all week. I took her to the doctor on Tuesday and he said 'virus' but come back if still feverish by end of week. Today I went back and saw another doc who said 'virus, no sign that antibiotics are needed, but if she got worse then maybe and let us know if temperature won't come down or she isn't drinking'

Well this afternoon she keeps falling asleep (I can't convey how unlike her this is) and bursting into tears and won't eat or drink more than a few sips.

I can't decide whether to think, 'she's just feeling crap and will get better', or 'this is worse and we should go back to gp before weekend'.

Can anyone help me get perspective on this? Am I being silly and worrying too much? Maybe as I haven't got anyone to talk to about it so am finding it hard to judge!

bit that's got me worried is that she keeps falling asleep. How high is her temp? has she slept much at night / during day?
If you put her favourite film / tv show on would she be even vaguely interested.

Sorry to hear your dd is feeling so poorly Aranea. And how stressful for you!

I'm no medical expert but when my dd was 3.5 she did have quite a nasty virus that lasted for 10 days - which seemed like a month - but she was drinking throughout that time. I thought she was never going to get better but she did eventually bounce back!

HOWEVER, I think I would go back to the doctor if your instinct is telling you something really is wrong (always trust that gut feeling) and/or she continues to not drink very much.

Even if you are wrong - so what - it is always better to be safe than sorry.

In the meantime, how about setting a kitchen timer and getting her to drink a few sips of something cool and pleasant (like diluted fruit juice) every 15 mins and see how that goes? My doctor recommended this when dd was recovering from something once and you can get a surprising amount down a child that way if you keep it up consistently. Flat Cocoa cola is good too ...

Ice pops or frozen juice is a brilliant way to get fluid into a hot child who doesn't want to drink. Hope she feels better soon, and definitely go back to the doctor if you feel worried.

She is now sitting up and munching toast and drinking a blueberry milkshake, so I think she is OK really. It's not nice seeing her so droopy and tearful though. And a bit difficult with a 4 month baby to look after too!

oh so good to know she is a bit brighter Aranea and tucking in to some grub... agree it's really worrying when they are right on that line of "should I get help or not?" Hope you both manage to get some rest tonight!
