i think my dd has a bladder infection

we went to the doc today after she cried doing a wee. she is 2.10 and doesn't drink enough in my opinion. he said we should leave a urine sample and if it comes back positive (we'll get the results on monday) then she can have antibiotics, which is fine - i don't want to give her antibiotics unnecessarily.

BUT she is still crying every time she does a wee. there is nothing to see externally, but she doesn't want to wipe her bum cos it hurts.

is there anything i can do to ease her pain? she's had calpol on the grounds that it won't hurt and it might help and i've bought some cranberry juice, but she's only had about 20ml of that. is there anything else i can do?

TIA

If you're having trouble getting fluids into her - try freezing some watered down juice and making ice lollies. I would telephone the GP and ask if there's anything she can have to help neutralise the acid in her wee. You can buy a product from the chemist (forgot what it's called sorry), but as she's so young they would probably recommend speaking to your GP. You can also give her dried cranberries. Hope she gets better quickly.

dried cranberries are a good idea, thanks for that. ime lollies just lead to drips on the floor, but not much more liquid intake.

although i object to antibiotics as a general rule, i also object to dd being in pain when carrying out such a basic function. i'm also a bit worried about what it might be if it's not a bladder infection. and if it definitely is one, shouldn't it be sorted asap? or will it clear itself up eventually anyway? oh for a medical degree...

I agree with you about antibiotics, but this is one thing I've found GP's prescribe for "just in case" as bladder infections can cause kidney damage. We've had a few issues in our family with this. I think Monday is too far away so if she's still poorly tomorrow I'd be back to the GP by phone at least. Longer term, what about a star chart to increase her fluid? As she's quite young, a small treat for every few stars and a big prize at the end.

I know its a bit strange but how about letting her wee in the bath then shower her off.... Maybe being immersed in warm water might help ( A friend did this and it did help take some of the sting away). It meant the child had a bath every few hours !

thank you for the advice people, i didn't realise that the bladder infection could cause a kidney infection. that's pretty shocking. she has seemed better today and yesterday anyway, so now am not sure what will happen with test results - she presumably doesn't need drugs even if it was a bladder infection. but does she still need a kidney scan? i've never even taken the child to the doctor before, and now this!
