Despite 3 weeks of bugging like a troop of monkeys then nits have arrive. I swear I could not see them. I'm keen not to put chemicals on the kids hair, does any one have an essential oils receipt. My friend does hers all the time with it, but she's on holiday.

Also been reading about the nitty gritty, is this really so much better than boots 2 quid one? Advise gratefully received.

Tea tree oil? They're not supposed to like that. I use an organic tea tree oil shampoo and when ds got the beasties (he uses something else), they didn't seem that keen on either dd or I (liked him a lot though!).

DS got them for the first time over half-term. We have been using Hedrin which does have chemicals but not the poisonous type that the old treatments used to have. It coats the lice so that they can't excrete and so they fill up with fluid and explode (lovely!).

Nitty Gritty comb is fab because it takes off the eggs as well as the lice. Don't bother with the oil stuff that they sell to use with the comb, it worked for me but wasn't slippery enough for DS's thick hair. Lots of conditioner was much more effective.

Thanks everyone. Nitty gritty it is. Their web site says that you can get it on presciption, does anyone have any experience of this? How easy is it?

Vosene do this new shampoo and spray
vosene 3 in 1
I used a spray similar to this and a comb before and it was effective.
I did read a thread somewhere about taking a louse on selatape into the chemist to get free lotion.

heres a tip
worth a try maybe Pour vinegar over dry hair wrap head in towel and leave for as long as you all can stand the smell the longer the better

Put neat shampoo straight on to hair before wetting ...then wash several times .......will smeel like fish and chips for a while but a darn sight cheaper and safer than chemical stuf ...which the lice do get immune to

Also put leave on conditioner on every time you wash hair as it makes hair shafts slippy and the lice can't grip .. Comb as well of course to get dead lice and eggs out ..........eggs should go a silvery colour when dead
Its acetic acid so it kills the lice and eggs....... but hair is Acid too so it doesn't harm it

Using conditioner after prevents the eggs attaching to hair shaft too as its too slippy

We've had 'visitors' this week too - but I feel I'm fighting a loosing battle.

I've used the nitty-gritty comb on DD's hair every other day for 9 days and used Hedrin twice. Tonight I found one 'live' one and combed out about 15 eggs - is this normal? I hoped by now to only be finding one or two eggs - certainly no live ones.

Could your DD be catching them again MM? If other kids in her class still have them she may be getting re-infected. Have you been combing the rest of the family too? Both DH and I had them when DS had them.
