Molloscum contagiosum , can anyone help ds so sad with it cried tonight!

I have posted on here before about this and realise its quite common.
However ds is spreading and getting worse rather than better.
Now dd1 has couple of spots on her.

Have taken him to doc who said ignore when he had 3/4 spots on his trunk.

Now he has about 100 on his trunk arms neck and spreading on his legs and back.

He started crying tonight about having to change for pe under the table

Have tried Elizabeth Arden , is there anything else?

No, but I feel for you and him. DD used to get upset about hers too. Can you ask his teacher to let him change in the loos?

I have googled and there seems loads of 'cures' but do they work ?

Have found 'crystacide' but think i need that on prescription.

I think i am going to have to go and speak to his teacher , he doesnt want me to.

can the teachers be sympathetic and let him change somewhere else?
are there any other children with it at school - my dd has it and so have half her class, though i didn't realise until i talked about it to the teacher.

Oh, really feel for you. It's a pain in the bum. Horrible thing. He can't be the only one in his class with it - maybe teacher could talk openly to the kids about it so he isn't so embarrrassed?

if it's any consolation ds's spread and got worse before completely clearing up.... are any of them itchy / bleeding? ds's did that then went....

He has eczema anyway so itches etc but a few have been bleeding i presume from him scratching them ?

Jen have no idea if anyone else has them at school , ds is too embarassed to mention them.
I will definately speak to the teacher though.

We haven't seen a dermatologist.

It is a virus that the body does not recognise until they burst. My gp said the way to get rid of them is to burst them (with gloves, cleanly so as not to spread) but this is often too painful for children.

dh used to burst the dds' sometimes.

DS had it about a year ago, on his chest.. it started with one spot then grew to dozens, and as he suffers from exzema some of them got quite enflamed and infected so we got a prescription for some hydrocortizone based cream which helped heal the infection and I think it helped the bumps to go away.. were we lucky though as they only lasted a month..

How would do you see a dermatologist ?
Is it by referral ?

He has squeezed a couple himself but i told him not too for fear of spreading.
They have anyway and far too many/painful to squeeze them all now.

Oh your poor DS, I really feel for him. DD (18 months old) had them. She had hers on her face, neck and back and they were spreading really quite badly. I took her to the GP who said basically, tough, nothing conventional medicine could do - they would eventually go after about 2 years.

As they were getting worse, I researched as much as I could (esp on Mumsnet), and firstly tried the 8 hour cream. This happened to coincide with us going on holiday. By the end of the holiday the spots had got really bad, and I was so concerned, I called a local homeopath as soon as we got back. We saw her pretty quickly, but by this time the molluscums were already scabbing over. I gave DD one of the homeopathic pills and within days all of the spots had cleared up (even the homeopath was surprised at how quickly when we went back for the check up).

So...I am not sure if it was the 8 hour cream, the sun & salt water of the Caribbean, the homeopath or all three that got rid of the blighters, but whatever it was, it worked!

I really hope you manage to find a solution for your poor DS.

What's teacher like? if nice and sympathetic can talk about it with class. Could you get a midsleeved vest for him to wear under school uniform so less is visible.

if you get a dermatologist referral - which I think would be very unlikely for mc - you wouldn't pay for it. You could go private and pay.

Did you have to push for referral WTS ?
Would a homeopath be cheaper to try first ?
Just that dd has couple too and whilst finding money for ds we could maybe manage we certainly couldnt for both of them (still hoping dd2 doesnt get them)

Will def speak to teacher too.

Ange good idea r/e the vest will remember that for pe day. Will tell ds that too.

As far as I know there is nothing that has actually been proved to work - they do go completely by themselves eventually, and there is no evidence that any connection between them going and any treatment is more than coincidence. Squeezing them does sped up the process a bit but it hurts a lot and can spread them and cause infections and scarring so not advised.

And I would be very wary of a treatment that "is like a poison to the body" for a condition which is unsightly, but is self limiting and not in any way dangerous. Could you tell us some more about it, watsthestory?

Lilyloo, could your ds wear a close fitting t shirt under his uniform so that he doesn't have to get completely undressed when he changes for PE?

Homeopath we saw was £60. Worth it imo. 2 months ago DD had molluscums covering the side of her face, neck and back. Now she has none.

I suppose the danger with this is given it has a shelf life does the treatment work or were they going anyway ?

Just cannot bear to see him cry about them.
