My DS has very sore chapped lips. I have tried most things, balms, Elizabeth Arden 8 hour which works normally etc, to no long term avail - we just about get there and then he pulls at the dry bits . They are so sore for the little chap.

I am looking for some ideas: whether extra vitamins may help, specific balms or food types? .

Same here.

Omega oils are supposed to help - you can get them in a bottle, or as a jelly sweet. Can't find any that mine will take, though.

Also giving your ds his own lipsalve stick to put on whenever he wants might help.

And holding out for the warm weather of course ...

No advice I am afraid, but my dd also 3 has chapped lips so will be watching to see if anyone has any suggestions.

Sorry havent a clue about vitamins etc though a multivitamin could always help.
My DS also suffers from dry lips and the only thing that has worked is good old Vaseline. Applied generously and frequently.

lansinoh cream (the breast feeding stuff) brilliant on all dry skin

When my son gets red, dry and sore above his top lip, I use Sudocrem which works quite well. He is 2.5 and wipes off anything I put on his lips so I wait until he is in bed, so maybe topping up whatever you use with another layer in the night might help? Aslo Carmex is supposed to be very good.

Licking is the worst thing to exacerbate it, found this and this

chuffinell · 23/02/2009 12:06

have you tried vaseline?

SwissCheese · 23/02/2009 12:51

Tried: vaseline, beewax based, jojoba, nivea. Haven't tried sudocrem or the camomile things tho, so may try that.
Can but hope!

My DS has had terrible chapped lips through constant licking/rubbing (when he gets a bit nervous). I usually find that a week of regular vaseline applications especially at night do the trick. When it's very bad I reapply when I go to bed as well.

If none of this is working have you considered that he might have an infection? I'd take him to the GP if it's proving that difficult to clear.

VaginaShmergina · 23/02/2009 12:58

My 2 DC's recently had an awful virus and had shocking dry, chapped and sore lips, we mixed equal amounts of aqueous cream and vaseline together and also got a chapstick for them both. The Nutrogena one seems to be the best for us.

It's not a pleasant thing to have, I hope you can get it sorted !!

LoveMyGirls · 23/02/2009 12:59

When dd had this I gave her a chapstick to carry around with her, used 1 a day but it stopped her picking it and it did clear up, now she's fine and has stopped picking.

I always found that putting vasaline on before they went to bed.. then loads when they fell asleep did the trick... it sort of helps to heal if they can't lick it off..

Dophus · 25/02/2009 11:34

Can't recommend Lansinoh highly enough - loads better than all the others.

It is the elixir of life (well chapped skin) in our household)

dolphins82 · 26/02/2009 14:53

vaseline is great for dry chapped lips

CrackerNut · 26/02/2009 14:54

Vaseline won't work because it doesn't allow the skin on your lips to breathe apparently.

andiem · 26/02/2009 14:55

blisteze is excellent it is water based and works better than the wax/oil based ones
they do a medicated one and a normal one

MascaraOHara · 26/02/2009 14:58

Have you tried a product called 'balm balm' available in boots with the lip care stuff.. it is excellent.. I get the white pot wihich is unflavoured/unscented... also good for other areas of dry skin and works wonders if applied straight before bed
