DS has tonsilitus again - how to convince Dr to take them out?

DS is 4.5 and has tonsilitus again - we spent the weekend with him vomiting and having a temp of 40 - we thought was this sickness bug going around but his breathing got laboured last night and we ended up at the emergency Drs who told us that his tonsils were huge!

This is the 4th time he has had it since starting pre-school in September so he is on his 4th week off of school. Poor little thing goes down hillso quickly - in the space of 3 hours on Saturday he went from being fine to vomiting and hallucinating with the temp - it is awful to watch and really hard for him. And I don't want him having to tale a course of antibiotics every month.

What are the chances of convincing the GP that he should be referred to have them out before he starts school in September and misses loads of days there.

We have private health so it hopefully should just be a matter of a referal - have appointment in the morning - how do I convince them to act.

I think you just have to tell him what you've put here - I don't think you can convince the GP, but if the pattern of his tonsilitus is bad enough to fit in with current guidelines for taking them out, then the GP will do it. The important thing is that the GP understands how bad it is and the effect you think it's having (and will have) on his education, so that he doesn't think it's "no big deal" which they sometimes seem to think...

Thanks - the emergency doctor said 5 times in 12 months - I am sure we are up to that already but last time he had it I mentioned getting them removed and the doctor wasn;t too keen.

Bloody keen enough to dish out antibiotics but not sort out the root of his problem!

My DD seemed to have tonsilitis all the time, she suddenly stopped at 6 years old. I found cranial oestopathy to be a great help, especially as she got really sore ears.

I know it's different in adults but I had mine out last tuesday and wouldn't wish the pain on my worst enemy.

It won't hurt to ask your GP for an ENT referral as it is they who decide whether to take them out or not, not the GP.
