If my children have had the MMR jab, does that make them immune?

Only both have blotchy cheeks and my son has a high temperature on and off over the last couple of days.

I took him to the doctor on Thursday because of his high temp and lethargy, but he didn't have a rash then.

I'm hoping it's not measles as I am 35 weeks pregnant.

Can anyone advise?

around 90% of children are immune after first MMR and around 95-99% of children are immune after having first MMR and pre-school MMR. So it is possible that it's measles I'm afraid. DS had measles at 4 after having had first MMR but not second.

call nhsdirect if he has a rash.

mrsturnip · 21/02/2009 21:21

It doesn't always work. If measles the rash will have started on the face and moved downwards. There are diagnostic spots in the mouth called kopliks spots, but they have often gone by the time the rash comes out.

If you're worried you could get your immunity checked. If you're ancient like me (38) chances are you will have immunity from childhood.

I don't think it sounds like measles - look at this

Will it effect my unborn baby if I have had measles? I'm going to check with my mum.

I mean affect if I'm not immune? I've been reading about stillbirth and prem labour.

tryingtobe - their rash is not as severe as those pictures, and it is only on their cheeks at the moment.

MissT - it is very likely you have already had it as a chil. If you hadn't you would have got it from your DC by now as the incubation period usually lasts for 4?12 days. I really hope your ok.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 21/02/2009 21:39

Have they had a cough, runny nose and conjunctivitis?

MissTFied · 21/02/2009 21:40

Thank you tryingtobemarypoppins. I'm sure all will be ok. Just can't help worrying.

If you have had measles, you are immune and your baby is not in danger.

TotalChaos · 22/02/2009 10:13

bump in case there's any medic/nursey people around to advise. As far as I understand it measles would only pose the same threat as any other disease would -e.g. if you got a nasty infection and became seriously ill during PG, that could be risky for the baby - but that mild measles would not pose a risk in the way that german measles would.

catweazle · 22/02/2009 10:40

It's not slapped cheek syndrome they've got is it?

I googled it and it says it can cause problems in pregnancy (though mainly before 20 weeks). We've got a case at our nursery ATM.

mrsturnip · 22/02/2009 12:06

slapped cheek is a lot more common so probably more likely. If it stays on the face it's unlikely to be measles, but do go and see the GP (out of hours) if you're worried.

Even rubella wouldn't pose a risk at 35 weeks.

If you've had it your baby will get antibodies from you and not be in any danger as cote says.
