DD's had a few and is normally away dor around 40mins. By the time you've grabbed a cup of tea and made your way back it's almost over

Good luck

Hi, ali. My dd had an MRI a few months ago. Her's was quite long and detailed and she was in the machine for 1 hr 50 - she didn't have an anaesthetic though. I'd say about an hour probably. Hope it goes OK and they can get to the bottom of ds's problems.

DrillBit · 21/02/2009 09:17

I had 4 for a DVA each one lasted around 30-40mins. He may have a contrast injection but if he is out it wont be a bother.

I can only assume he's having a GA as the machine is noisy, he will have a "mask over his face" and you have to keep quite still.

alibobins · 21/02/2009 09:17

Think thats whats making me worried as I don't really know what the results will be or the next step of treatment.
We go back for results on the 16th march

My dd 3.11 has a mri under ga in december, the worst bit was when she actually got the canular in then they put the ga in and she just went silent. They said to come back in an hour and it actually took 90 minutes so just be aware that it may take longer than they say - as we were worried sick something had gone wrong. She was ok coming out of anaesthetic and demanding tuna sandwichs 30 minutes later. Hope ds is ok x

Well I had 4 cos the neurologist didnt get enough inital data and couldnt decide what was best. they wanted me to have an angiogram
which I declined, then said u can have an angiogram sequenced MRI.
What I had is a Kinky Vein in my brain

Actually rather than having the normal "tree like structure I have one huge tree trunk.

The concern was if this connected to a artery
there was moe of a risk of it going pop.

Hopefully the best outcome will be they do nothing. Had mine for 50 years no harm there then.

I will be straight. If and I mean IF it will require surgery, ask a lot of questions about probably outcome. As in ny case and it was MY case post surgery would have left me as if I had had a stroke.

What he has is a funny left side of his face his left eye droops slightly and he's got a mark that comes up like a port wine birthmark but it is not always their (iyswim)
He has had 2 growths removed that stem from that area and at the moment has 5 more on his face.
I suppose its the unknown that worries me as the consultant said if its on his brain it will cause problems

He's got to have another mri soon on his chest but I know what I'm dealing with as he has always had breathing issues.

It's a shame they can't get them both done together alibobins. What a worry for you.

alibobins · 21/02/2009 12:40

I wish they could too but he's under two different consultants.

Are you sure it's an MRI on his chest? Not a CT scan? 2 very different imaging choices. It isn't really possible to image any structure that moves (ie in breathing or the perstaltic motion of the gut) via MRI except either having a very regularly, deep breathing person or a via a breath hold which in liver scan be 28 seconds!

lou031205 · 26/02/2009 20:36

Hi, DD (3.2) is having a GA MRI scan on 10th March, as her one in early feb was cancelled because the machine broke just before they came to get her.

We have been told to get there at 11, that she is likely to be scanned at some time between 1.30 and 4.30, and she will be able to come home when sufficiently awake.

The actual scan should be about 30 minutes, but it does take time to get the anaesthetic on board and monitoring done, then they will want to see that he comes out of the anaesthetic and is stable before calling you (I was a neuro recovery nurse), so I would imagine at least 45mins to 1 hour before you get to see him. He will be very well cared for, and there will be at least 2 doctors, a radiographer, and a nurse/OT with him, so plenty of support.

our little dd had an MRI aged 4 months, she was under for about 1 hour. it was the worst hour of my life and i have never ever been so worried or anxious. it was terrible. and then it was over and she was fine and the results were fine and i have felt to lucky ever since.
good luck xx

alibobins · 27/02/2009 17:30

Pretty sure consultant booked him in for a mri on his chest but haven't had the appointment through yet so maybe wrong.
Thanks for all the info feeling pretty sick at the mo but this time tomorrow it will all be over.
Ds in none the wiser playing in the conservatory

All done
Well he was down for 1 hour 30 mins in total and took another 20 mins to come round.
They couldn't use the contrast dye incase of allergy so we may have to have another one soon but hopefully they could see.
