hi,
i would like a little advice please,
ds who is nearly 2 drinks an awful lot and is constantly thirsty!
for instance when he gets up he will have a beaker full of juice and breakfast then about 30 mins-1 hour later he wants more juice and if i get dd a drink he cries for more!
through the day he must have around 6-8 beakers full of juice or water.
should i be worried?
i mentioned it to a friend and she said i should see health visitor or gp?
any advice please would be great.
thanks

I'd pop to the GP, excessive thirst can be a sign of diabetes, this can be missed in children. It's best to get it checked.

my ds2, who is 18mths, is a thirsty little chap but as long as he's eating I wouldn't worry tbh. You don't say if it affects what he eats (ie a lot of juice might suppress his appetite with the sugars etc) but if he's weeing and seems otherwise healthy, he's oroibably just someone who needs refreshment! I drinka lot of water during the day and always have done so it might just be the way he is. I would think drinking lots is preferable to drinking too little.
Thats said, if you are still concerned, then it won't do any harm to check it with your gp.

I wouldn't be overly concerned although, as scrooged says, any excessive thirst will be checked by gp for diabetes (sorry i didn't think of that! I've even had tests for it as I'm always thirsty but don't have diabetes which is why I thought he's maybe just someone who's thirsty,. like me and like my 18m th ds2!)
Sometimes siblings just want a dfrink when their older sibling does becaus rhen they cna be the sme, he ight have teeth coming through which mean he likes to have something to chew/suck on and the drink might satisfy that need....gp can check for diabetes but if all's well in that dept then I wouldn't worry - just get used to having out drinks all day!!

sorry for typos - I need my bed!

All that juice probably isn't great for his teeth though, maybe just offer water?

nickschick · 20/02/2009 01:30

I seem to recall ds1 always being thirsty and i think he was checked for diabetes but eventually as he got busy doing things drinking became less - rather like a ba habit hed gotten himself into.

dd2 drinks a lot, but hasn't accquired language skills great enough to ask for juice. She just screams blue murder whenever she see's anyone else with any drink.

She is also nearly two. I tend to avoid juice and never buy any to keep in the house. It's a treat for when we are and about . It's just milk or water at home.

To stop the constant demands for juice get a few large sports bottles and fill them up with fresh water each morning and leave them dotted about where your ds plays.

thanks for all the advice have taken him to gp who ruled diabetes out but wants to test his urine but says more then likely he just likes to drink a lot,
he has more water than juice which is good for teeth lol.
