My 11month old is throwing up and has high temperature - HELP!

Last night about 5pm my 11month old girl threw up quite violently. But she continued playing etc as normal, so we gave her her usual HIPP goodnight drink at 10pm, but within seconds of finishing drinking she threw up everything. She had some water after she threw up at 5pm but I think even all that came out. I changed her into clean nighty and sleepingbag but she threw up again! So at the end I ended up holding her against my chest for nearly 2hrs and every 20min she would start heaving really badly, although nothing really was coming out anymore. Then at 1am she was finally OK to be put back into her cot and she slept until 7am.

This morning I did not give her any milk, just 200ml water and one soft rusk. I took her temp just in case and it was 38!! So we took her to the doctors and she gave some rehydrating stuff and said not to give any milk today until tonight if she has managed to keep everything in.

She has had quite a bit of water today, but only two wet nappies. She ate some mashed potato and carrot, blueberry soup and milk buttons and kept it all in.Her temperature went to 38.8 at one point today, but I got it down with Ibuprofen. I feel quite worried that she is not getting enough fluids so I am tempted in giving her the usual Goodnight drink tonight and some Ibuprofen to keep the temperature down.

Please help me - Should I give her that drink tonight, maybe add more water than usually, or what should I do. If I just give her water I feel that she will be starving!! I feel like a bad mum, not knowing what to do. I know that my poor little baby needs fluids but I dont want to make her to throw up again!!!! HELP PLEASE

Did the GP not advise you what to do?

Fluids are more important than solid food. I would leave off with the chocolate and stick with plain food.

I wouldn't give her milk, I'd stick to water and ibuprofen.

If you want to give food, the recommended ones are Bananas, Rice, Apples and something beginning with T (dry Toast?). Having said that, dry cheerios go down well in our house for sick children.

Don't give anything with fat or dairy in it.

I'd stick to water. You won't starve her - appetite decreases when ill anyway. I think water's better than dairy-based drinks.

Hope she's better soon.

They say don't starve children now with D&V but make sure that it is plain food as has been said before, dry cereal, toast or something like breadsticks if she is actually looking for food but most importantly water is best, it helps flush out whatever is the cause. If she hasn't had many wet nappies then she needs the water. She won't starve if she only drinks water for a while!

Thanks for everyone for your comments. I gave her a diluted version of the good night drink at 9pm last night, because she woke up clearly hungry.

she had her milk this morning as well, but does not seem to want to eat much, but I feel happier now because she is drinking milk and water and is getting at least some wet nappies.

Thanks again to you all
