You can ring GP up and get advice without taking her in to infect everyone in the waiting room!!! GPs usually want to make sure kids are ok, to eliminate anything serious

PrettyCandles · 18/02/2009 18:36

My rule of thumb tends to be "is she fine in herself?", so I probably wouldnt' take her if she's otherwise OK. Unless it's so bad that she can't get to the loo in time, in which case I would take her. Keep her off all forms of milk and dairy products (this doesn't include eggs) until the diarrhoea is over.

I took my three year old dd after 5 days as per NHS 24 guidelines and the Doc said I should've taken have sooner.

He didn't give her anything but did check her over and send off a sample for analysis.

You need reassurance.

DanJARMouse · 18/02/2009 18:37

I would leave it, but thats because I was advised with 3yr old DD2 that it had to be 10 days before they would investigate.

If you have a sympathetic doctor though, I would get her checked out.

yama · 18/02/2009 18:40

Oh, and I don't think you should worry about infecting everyone in the waiting room.

GP said that as long as hands are washed it won't spread. People need to come into contact with the diarrheoa to be effected. I'm guessing you haven't been 'infected'.

TotalChaos · 18/02/2009 18:45

I would phone up the doc if you can, see if he wants her to come in or not. I was recently told that I should send off a sample as DS had D & V for over 2 days.

cazzybabs · 18/02/2009 18:58

thanks...maybe I'll phone up and ask

DanJARMouse I haven't seen you for ages

My dd is 3 yrs, has had sickness and the runs for 4 days now, she is fine also in herself, she just cant keep anything in, I was wondering what my next move should be but I think I will hold fire another day now.

maretta · 18/02/2009 20:15

Is she being sick.
My kids have all had a weird poo bug in the last couple of weeks - no sickness. They had the runs for about a week. There was occasional loss of appetite but otherwise they were fine.
I didn't take them to the doctor and they're all fine now.

cazzybabs · 18/02/2009 21:39

Maretta - snap, that is just like dd1. A week you say...well maybe I'll wait till after the w/e.

My DS is almost 10 months old and we're dealing with our first bout of D&V. The V seems to have stopped, and he's taking liquids and a bit of food, but the D has been going on for 48 hours now. NHS Direct say this is normal, but I can't stop worrying. Somebody reassure me I'm just being PFB!

amazonianwoman · 19/02/2009 23:49

DD 4.8 had D for almost a week, was OK otherwise. DS 1.11 just started with D today. Not chronic, but definitely not normal.

Baconsarnie - diarrhoea can linger for quite a long time in babies, a lot longer than with adults.

Hope all the sick ones are on the mend...
