Sensitive hearing - is there such a thing?

My ds (4yo) seems to have very sensitive hearing. Just this morning he put his fingers in his ears because the birds were singing
If a lorry goes past where we live, and we're not even next to the road, he will freeze in terror and put his fingers in his ears. He seems to hear things that I don't seem to notice and my hearing is fine.
It seems to be getting worse.
Is there such a thing as sensitive hearing or is he just a jumpy child?
Any help please.

Some children are oversensitive, yes. My friend's DD used to get upset in kindergarten as the children were too loud, or if they sang a song where they clapped their hands.

I don't know if there is anything you can do, but perhaps you could speak to your GP or HV about it.

my youngest is/was like this.

he still is sensitive, but not as much anymore. I think the playground at school has cured him of a lot of it.

he even used to get upset about the wind blowing, and as for certain tones in songs......he would sob and he too would put fingers in his ears.

the only thing that I could put it down to was that he suffers the most with ear infections, and had burst eardrums twice as a baby.

My ds was like this. He has grown out of it now he is 10.

He hated whistles and clapping and when it was loud in school it tired him out. He is a sensetive dc though. I wouldn't see it as a negative thing though.

my ds1 (4) is like this too. from a young age he has always put his fingers in his ears when scared and although he loves music, does not like it loud.

For unconnected reasons his hearing was tested recently and it is very sensitive. He can hear extremely quiet sounds.

My dd has v sensitive hearing - she has an auditory processing problem that really came to light at school when she was slow to learn to read and spell.

My DS has this. He is 3.4yrs. He recently saw a ENT paed as he has also been complaining of hearing buzzing in his ears.
The buzzing is mild tinnitus, but I also spoke to the paed about the very sensitive hearing (DS gets cross with the dimmer switch lights in my kitchen as they buzz very very very quietly if the lights are not on full beam. I cant even hear it but it really bugs him!).
The paed said its fairly common in young children and it does get better as they get older IF they are exposed to lots of noise. He said be as noisy as we can/want and he will become de-sensitised. If you try and be quiet more than usual or keep a quiet house to not upset the child then it could actually get worse.
