5 yo always vomits after a late night - is this normal or should I seek medical advice?

My dd2 is 5, almost 6.

She nearly always vomits after a late night. Most of time its after a party, so we put it down to too much crappy food, or too much excitement, but lately, any late night (party or not) can cause her to vomit.

Sunday night she went to bed at her normal time (8.00pm) but messed about in her bedroom (she shares with her sister). There was no school the following day so we didn't particularly put our foot down and we just let them play. They weren't overly exhuberant as dd3 sleeps in the next room and is easily woken so they weren't running around or anything. She finally went to sleep around 10pm and woke around midnight vomitting.

She threw up a couple of times and then slept through without incident till morning. She was right as rain next day. She always is.

Now, after a party, I can accept that it would be normal for her to vomit - but after a late night can't be normal, can it?

Is it common/normal or should we make a trip to the gp's?

Nope, not sicky at all.

She used to suffer chest infections as an infant, but has outgrown that and is basically as strong as an Ox!

I feel that I should really go to the gp's but its a strange one as she's generally as right as rain the next day

Thanks for bumping for me

Turn it around.

Maybe she had trouble getting settled for sleep - because she was already ill and the vomiting was the first more visible sign.

Ds is allergic to some food and sensitive to lots of other - one of his symptoms is an inability to sleep, another is vomiting.

This angle would also cover the party food.

I feel nauseous if I am tired.

Stomach migraine? At least that's what it was called when my sister was little/ No headache or other symptoms apart random vomitting eitehr before or after an exciting event. Little sis was always as right as rain the next day too.

My DCs used to randomly vomit too, turns out they were both intolerant to fresh orange. They'd eat oranges or have something made with fresh orange juice then chuck up hours later. Again they'd be right as rain the next morning.

20p - I didn't think about it that way ...yes, it could be that.
How would you check for allergies/intolerances?

Smudge - I've never even heard of stomach migraines! I think I'll take her along to the gps for a little reassurance if nothing else.

Thanks for your replies

You keep a food diary and then check for common combinations of foods on the nights she is sick.

I always threw up when tired as a child.

Still do when severely sleep deprived.

Take her to the gp if you're worried.

Update:

Have booked an appt next week with GP.

Not sure whats going on with her, but I just have a niggling feeling that something is not quite right and that its best to get it checked out. Prob something and nothing but best to check, I think.

Thanks all

If its allergy induced, doctors really not much help - as has been said before, do a food diary...

plonker · 20/02/2009 14:48

Yes, will do the food diary too

Two possible triggers of abdominal migraine are overtiredness and/or low blood sugar. Does your daughter eat something (piece of toast, bowl of cereal - i.e. something not exciting!) before she goes to bed? My daughter used to have attacks regularly at 4.00 am until we made her eat a couple of slices of toast before going to bed. Hope you can find the cause.

georgimama · 20/02/2009 15:18

If she throws up afer a late night, and is otherwise fine, why let her stay up until 10pm? That's far too late for a 5 year old anyway.

plonker · 20/02/2009 15:27

flaming - no, she doesn't eat before bed, will try that though - thanks

georgie - not sure if you read my OP. We didn't "let her stay up until 10pm" - she went to bed at her normal time of 8pm, she just didn't settle down immediately, she played quietly with her sister for a while. There was no school the next day so we didn't put our foot down particularly hard on the matter.
Anyway, thats not entirely the point, obv late nights will occur, and when they do, they frequently lead to her vomitting. It used to be just after parties etc so we thought it was food related, but just lately, any late night could set her off.

I wanted to know if its normal/common.

Clearly she doesn't go to bed at 10pm every night, I'm not an idiot ...
