ds2 is 13 weeks and from birth was very stuffy/bunged up and snoring/snorting. MW kept saying just newborn mucus and to cut a long story short saw few docs over xmas as he kept stopping breathing. one suggested floppy larynx and told me to discuss with the paed (seeing for severe reflux) anyway paed said it was the reflux causing it. He had to stay in hosp for a week and had a barium xray which proved reflux, sleep monitoring and also the sats montior and a ph study.

they said the stopping breathing wasnt an issue (doesnt do this hardly at all anymore) anyway last week saw paed who put him on omeperazole and domperidone for the reflux and she said nose probs were still the reflux and that the meds would sort it out. So over a week later and he is no better.

Im going to gp tomorrow to talk to her abour it as it cant go on. He also has an odd 'cough' which sounds more like he is a cat with a furball stuck. he doesnt sleep well and is woken up by the snorting type noises he makes. it is llike a severe cold but without the snot and bogeys (sorry!) it is like his nose is blocked (mainly when asleep) by something and he cant breath properly. olbas oil, steam, humidifiers and propping up are already being done and dont really help

gp at his 10 week check said he prob just had small nasal passages.... his chest and lungs have always been clear and x ray has shown nothing in his torso. Anyway a friend suggested enlarged adenoids today and i have researched (plus a v helpful MNer has helped) and think this is a strong possibility. what i want to know is what is your experiences in this with a baby so young? What is the gp likely to do/say? What can i do to make sure they listen?? My gp is very good so hoping she will do something about it tomorrow. I want to see an ENT specialist.

Sorry this is vague and hard to read, am v tired from him waking!

hi there. was wondering if you had had any progress on this, my dd is now 6.5 months and very similar except her nose runs like no tomorrow but still sounds really snotty. dr suggested it might be adenoids.

gagarin · 05/05/2009 18:51

AFAIK the risks of trying to operate on large adenoids in babies would outweigh the benefits to sleep.

An ENT specialist may agree with large adenoids BUT as they prob wouldn't do anything due to risks involved a referral may well be of no help.

wombleprincess · 06/05/2009 12:35

its less the sleeping i am concerned about, more the constant ear infections which may be caused by the adenoids..the pain she suffers is unbearable for us all. bumping incase the op picks up...

I dont have any insight to the problem, but i wanted to add that i have a similar problem with my son, and it was through researching on the internet that came across u post, i havent broched my GP about it yet will do today, but like u it seems the only logical explaination...... my son has stopped feeding due to this and after weeks of sleepless nights, not feeding and constant crying i am at my wits end. I hope u have had some success in solving ur problem.

regards

My DS was exactly like this when he was born-he was so loud that we never needed to have a baby monitor as we could hear him all over the house.

He got ear infections all the time from when he was 6 months old as his adenoids were so big that nothing was draining away.

After a hell of a lot of fighting with the ent dept at the hospital who said they wouldn't remove them until he was 6 we took him to see an ENT consultant privately thanks to DH's medical insurance. He took one look at him and said they need to come out now cause it was affecting his eating/speech and everything. He had them and his tonsils out 2 weeks later and the difference was amazing.

I totally agree with the others that I very much doubt they'll do something when he was this young but hopefully it'll help a bit to know you're not alone. I knew something was wrong when he was tiny but nobody was listening so can totally understand how you feel.

My 5 year old has just been diagnosed with sleep apnoea and is due to get his tonsils and adenoids out. He has always snored from being a tiny baby but has never had ear infections or tonsilitis but does have really large tonsils. I think ENT will take them out if there is a problem that they think will be fixed by this (obviously though he is much older than OPs baby).

I know it is an old topic but maybe my comment will be helfull for someone.
It will be long story but yes- baby can have outgrown adenoid and can have adenoidectomy!!
My daughter was 2 months old (maybe 6wo) when I recognize her breathing is very nosy and her chest doesnt looks fine when she was breathing...
We went for a&e and they transfered us to childrens outpatient because nurse couldnt find her saturation.
On childrens outpaptient paediatrition said she is fine it is just block nose (they cleared her nose by pressure) it is normal she didint want eat and tried to send us home but they changed doctors for afternoon so the now paediatric lady said we should stay during night...
So we stayed there but noone visited us during night on a morning back doctor who would send us home day before so he gave us saline nebulization give us ENT doctor (because I asked) who puted camera on her nose for maybe 20-30sec and send back home... Because everything was fine.
Week after we back hospital with ambulance becuse my daughter had long gaps between breathing and she was floopy... We still had saline nebulization.
Next day they made chest xray (because I asked) everything was fine (excluding her weight but they said they checked her weight in clothes on a a&e so it is normal we have difference) and sent us home...
Week after we went for baby clinic ang my daughter was lighter than month before!!
they send us to GP but it was before christmas so GP have to check her weight on their own scale and back in two weeks time.
When we went back she lost more (for 4mo her weight was worse than for 2mo!!)
They contact paediatric team who call me I have to go to them!
Just said sorry (she didnt think she will be in that condition and loosing her weight when she sent us home last time!)
Put us on a children ward (we seen lady from diet etc who had an idea to give my lil one solid food! because breastfeeding maybe not enough!)
We seen another ENT who was amazing! She was with camera on my baby nose about 20mins (during her sleep, during breastfeeding and after).
She said we have an outgrown adenoid!
They gave us steroids for 2 weeks and book surgery for it if it will be not any better after steroids so finally my daughter she had an adenoid cut when she was 5 months old!
Now she is 21 months old and her tonsils are outgrown...
It is podsible to have outgrown adenoid with baby!

kamam · 22/06/2018 22:53

that was my babies breathing with outgrown adenoid (2 months old and adenoidectomy when she was 5mo)

widgetbeana · 24/06/2018 22:56

My dd has large adenoids and a snotty nose everyday for 4 years. I went back to the doctors many times about the thick green snot and the snoring as well as mouth breathing and periodic pauses in breathing while relaxing. They wouldn't remove until she was 4. 3 weeks after 4th birthday she had them removed. Immediate improvement in sleep and a final end to snot! Hurrah!

Basically they won't remove them under 4 unless causing sleep apnoea or feeding issues (is what I have heard). But keep seeing the doctor and film any snoring or apnoe episodes if you can.
