Sunscreen issue

Hi, can anyone help or share experiences? My DS, nearly 8, is only able to tolerate factor 15 sunscreen from one manufacturer. Any other manufacturer (eg supermarkets) or a higher factor, has brought him out in spots/rash, and on the one occasion I thought I was being a good mum and liberally applied thick factor 30 cream, his face swelled up and his skin was all rashed and itchy.

GP said "do you really want to use sunscreen- you don't need it unless you are going abroad". Hmmm.

Over to the good mumsnetters.

Alot of sunscreens have chemicals in them that cause a rash, I can't remember what the chemical's called. My son comes out in hives with alot of sunscreens but P20 works for him. You can get this in different stregnths. It does last a long time though, you don't have to reapply it but it's a bit expensive. They sell in in Wilco's and superdrug.

So it's called P20? Thanks- just thinking about possibly going somewhere where the weather may be over 20 degees and worrying about how to protect him.

I've got a friend who's had the same problem with her daughter. They use bergaderm and have found it to be brilliant. It used to be called proderm. If you type bergaderm into google there's loads of places that sell it.

Yes. You can get it in factor 30 aswell, it's really thick and runny, more like a liquid. It's in a white box with an orange and yellow stripe across. It's the only one ds can have, I've road tested them all, even the hypoallergenic ones, they all cause an itchy rash, they have something in them with a long name that alot of people are allergic to.

I too was going to suggest Bergaderm. It was originally formulated for people with eczema and I believe you can get it on prescription.

However, we were in Egypt last week and I put it on my son on the third day we were there, we had been using Piz Buin one day long before that, when he started screaming it was stinging him. His skin felt like sandpaper and I think he had prickly heat but I don't know if that had anything to do with the sunscreen or not. He moaned about the Piz Buin the next day too mind you.

Ho hum, ignore that rant it was no help was it, lol. Definitely speak to your doc about Bergaderm though.

here

this range was suggested to my brother by his dermatologist. They are brilliant and I use it all the time on all three of my dds. I use the matt face cream all the time.

We are in Aus and the dds are requested to have sunscreen applied everyday before school and kindy. So I find this really gentle and good for their skin.

Another vote for Eidsvold's Sunsense. Been using it almost exclusively for 7 yrs on dds who have been eczema prone and it has worked brilliantly. If you google it you can get a link to their homepage. I have found their UK distributor very helpful and fast.
