Help! Baby uncomfortable when laid on back and spitting up saliva

Hello,

Whenever my baby (only 1 week old) is laid on his back he spits up saliva (little bubbles appear around his lips and he makes lots of gurgling, choking sounds). This appears to make him uncomfortable and disrupts his sleep. Has anyone had this problem? Does anyone know what it's caused by or what can be done?

Thanks for any help...

Laura

Have you tried propping up uis moses basket? we used to put the head end up on books to ease this.

weell I'll be flamed for this but.. My lo was like this so I propped him on his side (about30 degree angle) and made sure he wasn't likely to flop onto his stomach or that airways would be blocked. the rational being that saliva would trickle out rathe than him choke. When he was just born the hca put him on his side for this reason, but its up to you

Hiya, they should have cleared his airways as soon as he was born. In most european countries it's a routine procedure. Now there is not a lot you can do, just wait for him to do all the hard work by himself .
Plus I've just posted this on another thread:

I've never liked the idea of laying my baby on their back as my two DC were really mucusy from day one, plus my daughter had slight reflux too, and it happened on way too many occasions that she almost choke on her own milky vomit in her sleep. The same thing happened to many of my friends' babies, so everyone I know does the same. I really cannot understand this crazy fixation with laying your baby on their stomach. IMO, laying them on their side, but propping them carefully so they cannot roll onto their tummy is far better, not to mention safer!!

Watching this thread as DS sometimes does this.. but atm he is being grumpy unless in his buggy/being cuddled off to sleep so not like it for now.. he blows spit bubbles too though when laid down.. he is 4 weeks

Maybe its just men Cos he snores too/is very vocal lol

Good luck with finding the answer OP x Just out of interest have you asked the MW or HV?

sorry about the above, full of spelling/grammar mistakes .
Uhm, and also I meant to write that I don't understand this crazy fixation with laying your baby on their BACK, which everyone feels they must adhere to for some reason...

There are pillows like this to make sure your LO can't flip over:

I have one for bubs and it's perfect. Though now my LO is sleeping on the tummy (4mths) and perfectly happy with it.

Wanted to add: side is really best in this case as on tummy your LO might spit up milk and put his face in it.

Cushion was very useful and worth it's money.
