Not me this time, my DS, WWYD in this situation - fever & light aversion

Welcome to the week from hell in my house. We havent slept in fucking ages. I have pneumonia its been a fucking nightmare.

DS has been ill all week but with nothing much. Has had a temperature all week. Quite high at times. Some D&V a couple of days ago mixed with his usual constipation that he has been treated for for months now. He isnt sleeping at all. But he has ASD (aspergers) and is very very very difficult to deal with at times with regards to routines & objecting to all sorts of everything so there seems so little we can do. He refuses to take medised. He wont let me put a cool damp flannel on him to cool him down. Shit I dont know the list goes on.

Just now on putting him back to bed after another unsuccessful trip to the toilet where he was trying to do a poo he said the light hurt his eyes and to turn it off. It was just a nightlight. So I turned the overhead on to see his reaction & he covered his eyes up. Now he is light sensitive anyway with his ASD but in full sunlight never with little lights like that.

I have put a call in to my out of hours doctor. NHS direct has a 4 hour wait on non emergency calls though why you would call them in an emergency I am not sure. I cant breathe and I want to go to sleep. What should I do?

he is coughing a lot but it seems clear from his chest

The light sensitivity MAY be due to his being agitated. I have light sensitivity which gets worse when I'm stressed. I also think that most people would cover their eyes up at night time if the main light is switched on.

Is he taking liquids OK?

Not sure what else I can say, except go with your gut instinct. If you think its an emergency then its better to be safe than sorry.

It must be horrible for you when you are feeling so ill yourself

MaryBSnowing · 15/02/2009 02:40

(and I have Aspergers also)

thanks for replying. I dont think its an emergency really no I am just worried. And totally sleep deprived and beyond ill so lost my perspective I just dont know what to do with him. He refuses to sleep more than an hour or so at a time, he wont let me cool him down, he wont do this he wont do that. Believe me I am fully sympathetic about his AS but I am shattered and just want to treat him so he gets well. The whole reason I am so sick is that I had to walk him home (in his buggy) in the rain as he couldnt transition from buggy to car unexpectedly and honestly I dont blame him at all I just feel totally out of control. I cant do all the normal things to bring a fever down for him. He is the most delightful, loving child but totally wilful and beyond any sort of reach with regards to what he will put up with.

he has fallen asleep now so I think I will try to too although the doctor is supposed to be calling me back soon.

My son also has AS, so I am totally sympathetic to how you are feeling. Try to get some sleep... it sounds like you need it. Is there anyone who can give you a bit of a break tomorrow so you can get some proper rest, assuming he's OK?

hereidrawtheline · 15/02/2009 08:23

his temp has got to 103 and although he slept a little in the night he has mainly cried so we are taking him to out of hours doctor in an hour & a bit.

I hope you get on Ok and it's just a short lived virus or something. You must be feeling utterly desperate, I know how it is to be ill with an ill child as well, I am thinking of you xxx

MaryBSnowing · 15/02/2009 09:29

Yes, hope all goes well, and that you both get some rest today.

DH took him to the doctor while I slept. I actually cant go outside at the moment because of my lungs, the air is too cold for me to breathe. The doctor was very good & thorough & checked everything over well. He checked DS's urine and there were keytones in it. He said as his fever has gone on so long and there are keytones in urine we have to take him & urine sample to GP on Tuesday to rule out diabetes. I am trying not to shit myself in terror at that. So basically on Tuesday we are wanting there to be no keytones and no glucose. I think I will perhaps get a complex if DS is DX with AS & diabetes within a month, the same month I get pneumonia!

oh that is very frightening

Could it be just a urine infection?
Ketones are caused by not having had enough to eat.
Glucose is the one that can indicate diabetes.

t least if it is, you will have had all your diagnoses at once and know what you are dealing with. Let us know what happens won't you xx

hereidrawtheline · 15/02/2009 14:09

I will definitely keep you posted. I dont know how I am going to get through now til Tuesday. My Dad had a sister who had diabetes from a child and died from it in her early 20's before I was born in the 70's so I am praying it isnt that. I know if it is we will manage but it just seems so scary.

Diabetes is much easier to control now, and monitoring is a lot better.

As FA says, ketones are caused by not having enough to eat.
