Blisters suddenly appeared on babies bottom. Nappies? Food?

I was not sure what topic to put this under so bear with me please!

My almost 7 month old has been in eco disposables since birth. We had a clear out of some boxes and found the cloth nappies from ds1 and 2. We decided to put him in those yesterday and today. This morning, I noticed 2 blisters had suddenly appeared on his bottom and he was really sore. I am changing him very regulary so that is not it.

In addition (hence the confusion over where to put this question) he is BLW and eating a variety of new foods.

So.....is it the nappies? Or the food? I used cloth with two other children. No problems with ds1. Ds2 has bad excema and the cloth certainly caused problems for him.

I have put ds3 back into disposables for now to ease him poor bottom. We have had nothing like this with him before.

On the other hand, the last two days he has been eating beans (baked, butter, canneloni, etc). Could this be it?

Is he teething?

Is his poo a funny colour?

It might not be anything to do with the nappies. My little one gets a sore bottom when he is teething. His poo goes a very funny colour and his bum gets sore immediately. In the morning his bum could be clear and straight after he does a poo it's red raw and can get blistery. We always change him regularly and have had no change to his nappies or diet, so I know it's the teething. Apparently, when they teeth they get more acid in their tummies and this can make their bottom sore.

I use a cream on him called Metanium. It comes in a yellow tube and is the best cream. It clears up his sore bum extremely quickly. I also give him half an hour of bear bum time just after he does a poo (to minimise the risk!) or after a bath and this is really effective too.

He is 16 months now and has got a lot of teeth and it happens every time so we now know how to deal with it.

I dont think it is the beans, they dont have a high acidity and I cant see how they could make him sore.

Good luck, hope his little bottom feels better soon!

Could it be a fungal infection? Or something like thrush? My DD suddenly broke out in a couple of small but very sore looking blisters a few weeks ago. Doc prescribed an anti-fungal cream and it cleared it up in a few days.

We've also used the Metanium cream, which is great.

Also, do you use wipes? Ditch them. I've found that using cotton wool & warm water helps sore bums clear up loads faster.

1 of 3 things spring to mind

  1. Is her teething. Mine all get intense nappy rash that ast s for just 24hrs as they cut their first teeth. TBH though it has never blistered with mine just been very red and sore. Metanium is great for this.
  1. Thrush. Did you wash the old cloth nappies after storing them? Did you boil wash or bleach them? If not they could have some candida on them which has caused thrush? You need Clotrimazole cream for this available at the chemist. Just ask for something for nappy thrush and hte chemist will sort you out. You need to treat for 4 weeks after all symptoms have gone. This does tend to blister so may be the most likely explaination.
  1. New foods can cause nappy rash too. Again Metanium...
